Show 'She's Out of Control' looks at generation gap Park Record Thursday, May 18, 1989 Page B7 mm by SUSAN DAVIS Record guest writer "She's Out of Control" is the true life comedy about every teenager's fantasy and every father's nightmare. It's the tale of Katie Simpson (Ami Dolenz, daughter of Mickey Dolenz, the former drummer of "The Monkees,") an awkward adolescent who blossoms into a beautiful young woman, and quite suddenly finds herself pursued by teenage boys dealing with their own biological changes-primarily over-active glands. Katie is thrilled with nature's sudden sud-den gifts and the fellows' sudden attentions; at-tentions; her father, Doug Simpson (TonyDanza) is not. "She's Out of Control" emphasizes that as a parent of teenagers it's not so much whether you trust your kid, but how much you trust yourself. "She's Out of Control" highlights the human cycle of life. In essence, it underscores the idea that as a parent you experience adolescence twice: Once as a teenager, then as a parent. That may be a horrifying thought depending how clear your skin was the first time around. Still, the second time around is not easier only different, trying-and funny. Simpson returns home from a business trip to discover that his sweet, tomboyish daughter has been transformed. Simpson, the hip general manager of a rock radio station, sta-tion, makes exaggerated attempts to protect his daughter. His well-meaning well-meaning endeavors backfire and drastically alter his life, sending him on nocturnal spying jaunts, to a bizarre psychiatristpop culturist, Dr. Herman Fishbinder (Wallace Shawn) and ultimately to jail. What makes this movie so special and so different is that it tells the real story about what it's like growing grow-ing up today, not just from the kid's point of view but the parents perspective as well. It even relays the feelings of a teenage boy taking a girl out on a date and having to face down her father. A scene where I r r' 1 M . c..,: . y ' ': --:- : Tony Danza and Ami Dolenz in "She's Out of Control." Doug must handle the scrutiny from his fiancee's father. No matter how old his daughter gets, to a father, she's still his baby. Simpson's fiancee, Janet Pearson (Catheine Hicks), endeavors to educate him about a young woman's emotional spectrum. But in the end Simpson must make a fool of himself-the ridicule only a dedicated parent would endure-challenging a variety of his daughter's suitors, risking everything in his life, even his dauther's love, before they are united in compromise. In an era when fathers are participating par-ticipating more directly in their children's lives from infancy through adulthood, "She's Out Of Control" depicts the tug-of-war relationship rela-tionship with a steady eye that tells both the father's and daughter's viewpoints-his loving need to do what he thinks is best for his child, and his daughter's desire to be trusted to cultivate her own experiences. ex-periences. Ironically, Simpson, who tools around town in a shiny red sportscar and can remember meeting Mick Jagger, abandons his sophistication when he realizes that his worldly experiences ex-periences don't encompass the complex com-plex metamorphosis of a girl's passage into womanhood. In life, there are wonderful twists. There's a scene in the film where the father, Doug, hoping that his daughter, Katie, doesn't fall for this tough guy, visits Dr. Fishbinder, a noted psyciatrist. Fishbinder is really real-ly a faddist who wrote a book about teenage girls and how to handle them. The doctor advises Doug to befriend his daughter's boyfriend as a way of discouraging the relationship, relation-ship, but what happens is that Doug sees a lot of himself in the young fellow-which leads to a humorous, wild and fiery drag racing scene. It proves that behind every adult facade the kid is still waiting to reveal himself. The convoluted relationship between bet-ween fathers and daughters may be a timeless rites-of-passage saga, but with Tony Danza and Ami Dolenz in the starring roles, the movie takes on a grand look-a late 1980sl990s feel of the lives, fashions, music and preoccupations of America's youth. The humor develops from the real comedic beats of daily living, not from gimmicks. It's a quality film with characters and a story. Today's father, no matter how liberated, recalling their own rowdy inclination inclina-tion as teenagers, shudder at the thought of what's in store for their own daughters. The hip father suddenly sud-denly sprouts an "old fashioned" attitude at-titude as Victorian as that of his parents. JWrn mmm z New business books are at library by ORESTA Z.
