A productive season that yielded some expected as well as some surprising sur-prising results came to a conclusion Saturday for the Park City High School track and field teams at the state meet in Provo. The highest finish for a Miner boys' team since coach Bill Kahn joined the program six years ago was not totally unexpected, as the squad came in fourth with 58 points. Hurricane took the team title with 87 points, followed by Emery (82) and Wasatch (67). Trailing Park City in fifth place was Delta with 43. "I think we finished as high as we realistically could," said Kahn. "I expected the boys to do as well as they did, but the girls scored more points than I would have thought they could. I have to be pleased with both teams and the season they had." Maintaining their familiar dominance of the hurdles were the PC threesome of Corey Francis, Norman Burns and Russ Bradford. Only Lehi's Clint Peck proved superior over the 110-meter barriers, bar-riers, with the Miners sweeping the next three positions. Francis, Burns and Bradford also played a major part in gathering additional ad-ditional team points in the 400-meter relay, linking up with Larry Winterer to sweep to a surprising first place finish. "I didn't expect them to take it because there really isn't an actual sprinter among them," said Kahn. "They just seem to build upon each other in relays, and running intact as a unit for so long has made them great at the baton pass. Their exchanges ex-changes were just perfect." Another Park City relay the girls' 1,600 squad swept to victory, this one an easily foreseen win for the team that narrowly missed the state record a week earlier. The mark remained unchanged again, however, possibly due to the ease of the unchallenged triumph. "It's hard to set a record when you're running run-ning all by yourself," pointed out Kahn. "By the time Anji (Buckner) finished her (third) leg, she had increased in-creased the lead to about 50 meters. The last two runners didn't have anyone in sight to push them." Joining Buckner on the dominant unit were Jessie Whitesides, Misha Bradford and Cheryl Hannay. For Hannay, it was just one of four medals earned in the meet. The versatile junior who will return along with the other three members of the relay team next year added seconds in the 800 meters (2 minutes, 27 seconds) and 400 (60.8) and a fourth in the 1,600 (5:36) to her list of season ac complishments. Jessie Whitesides scored a fifth in the 400 with a 62.0 clocking and Buckner completed the Miner scoring scor-ing with a fifth in the 100-meter run (13.45). Other places for the boys' team came in the pole vault where Ian Adams took fourth with a 12-0 clearance and Russ Mathews sixth by soaring 11-0. Pete Meuzelar rounded out the field event points with a 124-9 fifth place toss in the discus. Mike James put together a pair of strong races, clocking 4:45 to take third in the 1,600-meter run and finishing fifth in the 3,200 in a time of 10:29. Burns returned to the track to take the state title in the 300-meter hurdles with a 40.40 tour of the circuit. cir-cuit. The only other Miner points came from another relay unit, the boys' fourth place 1,600-meter squad. Winterer, Bradford, Roger Osguthorpe and Steve Osguthorpe clocked 3 : 32 to earn the position. Another pair of winners came in the scholastic arena as Melanie For-sythe For-sythe and Kim Winterer were honored as Academic All-State athletes for their achievements in the classroom.
