Show Page B2 Thursday, May 18, 1989 Park Record Super hooters soar info state final "Rendezvous Like an unstoppable juggernaut, the Park City boys soccer squad continued con-tinued to vanquish opponents on its way to the Region 9 championship game Wednesday. Twice they repelled the challenge of pretenders to the crown the past week, the first a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Waterford May 12 and the second a 6-1 first-round playoff victory over Wasatch Monday. "These kids have taken it upon themselves to work on playing as a team," said Park City coach Jesse Schaub. "They've been sending the ball to the open man, utilizing each other better, and as a result, we're getting more goals." On Monday, the visitors from Heber saw more than enough goals go flying into the net they were attempting at-tempting to defend. And it didn't take the Miners long to get started, Twice in the opening minutes Park City's Mark Verrone narrowly missed miss-ed header attempts, but on the second se-cond one, teammate Brandon Vierig was in position to make it count. Vierig drilled a shot that was slapped slap-ped at by the Wasatch goalie, who inadvertantly in-advertantly helped the ball into the net. With 20 minutes expired Vierig broke loose up the middle, beating both a would-be defender and the goalie for an easy boot from seven meters out. The Miners took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break as a light drizzle began to fall. As the second half began, it soon began to pour not rain, but Park City Ci-ty goals. Only five minutes in Justin Christensen used some deft movements to outmaneuver two Wasatch fullbacks and clear for a powerful boot from 10 meters out. The ball sailed high into the center of the goal to extend the home lead. Verrone opened up the rout with a well-placed kick into the right corner cor-ner from 20 meters out and then centered a pass to an open Vierig who had beaten the goalie for an easy nubber. A short time later, Park City registered its final score to complete the drubbing at 6-1. "We knew that Wasatch had improved im-proved from the first time we saw them this season (a 3-2 PCHS win), and they seemed to be playing better as a team the first half," said Schaub. "But the second half we just really went right after them and took the game away." In the Waterford game the Miners had to claw back from an early 1-0 deficit with a pair of second half Canyon Racquet Club tennis clinic The teaching professionals at Canyon Racquet Club in Salt Lake City will be conducting a special spring tennis clinic at Prospector Athletic Club on Saturday, May 20 from 3 to 5 p.m. The clinic is designed to polish stroke technique and improve fundamentals. A Waterford breakaway 30 minutes into the contest established the visitors' lead, scored on a rebound re-bound after the initial charge had been repelled. Park City's Christensen came right back to try and answer the score, but his hard shot ricocheted off the hands of the Waterford goalie over the top of the goal. The Miners knotted the score as the second half barely got underway, under-way, Christensen connecting this time with a rocket into the upper right corner of the goal. Wild weather threatening the area finally brought in an ice storm as the second half progressed, and Waterford Water-ford took the cue, looking to ice the game with a surge following a cor 111 SUBARU "JUSTY - , : . ner kick. A shot zipped past Miner goaltender Dave Schenblum, who was positioned at the near standard, and appeared destined to enter the far corner of the net. Park City fullback Colin Wilkinson found a way to stop the apparently inevitible, however, by getting a hand on the ball from his position near the far standard. Though whistled for a penalty, the quick move proved to be a game-saver when the ensuing free kick was stopped stop-ped short by Schenblum. "It was just a heads up play that might have won the game for us," said Schaub of Wilkinson's heroics. "When he saw the ball was past the goalie he was smart enough to know he had to hand it." For a while, most of the action came out of the sky, as the ice and wind pelted the players with increasing increas-ing intensity. Quite a few Waterford rushes at the goal were accompanied accom-panied by thunder and lightning, but no scores resulted. With time winding down, Park City Ci-ty was awarded a right-side corner kick. As the ball sailed into the middle mid-dle of the fray in front of the Waterford Water-ford goal, the visitors' fullback rose high for a header. The ball ricocheted the wrong direction for his team, however, and Park City's Vierig was credited with the score as the ball trickled into the net. The Miners defense stiffened to prevent any damage as the final four minutes ticked off the clock.
