Get government off our backs Dear Editor: On April 7, 1983, The Newspaper ran a syndicated column by Harriet Van Home. In her article she claimed, "In this rich and lucky country there are few spectacles more disgusting than the rich in revolt against any law that would deny them their proudest pleasure in life cheating on their taxes." The only way this country got to be "rich and lucky" is because some of its people worked damn hard, thus taking advantage of the capitalist free enterprise system. Our present leaders in government, bent on creating a socialistic democracy, first take away huge chunks of that hard-earned income, then benevolently give some of it back in various ways designed to buy votes, because their only concern is not upholding the Constitution, as they are sworn to do, but in getting reelected. Van Home blasts the banks and Savings and Loans for resisting the 10 percent withholding law that will cost 3 billion dollars to administer. Who does she think will pay that bill? Surely not the banks! It will be passed on to the consumer, as is every other tax or cost, Interested in fine dining? See our Restaurant Guide Page B7 U.!.! III. I I MM UN Ml .LI. 1 ft If F i' . Furthermore, Further-more, I think Van Home is absolutely wrong in labeling as a "loophole" the underdeclaring of dividencs and interest. inter-est. Hasn't she ever heard of form 1099? The one the banks and S & L's have to send in on everyone receiving dividends divi-dends and interest? If "recipients are squirreling those dollars away undeclared un-declared and untaxed," they are making a grave error in thinking it will go unnoticed. No, this proposed law was just another way for our government to increase its already insatiable appetite for cash flow and to use our money interest free, before it is even due. Van Home's article is entitled "The Rich Get Richer." One of the reasons they do is because they are able to make "equity investments," such as office and apartment buildings, etc., which increase in value as a direct result of inflation. Where do they get this money? From the bankers who loan out the average working man's money intrusted to them for safekeeping safekeep-ing at 5'2 percent. Unfortunately inflation eats up most of that, and the government takes the rest through a direct tax on the interest income, leaving leav-ing him with less than he started with. In Irwin Schiff's book, The Biggest Con, he states that ironically this theft by the government from the poor to the rich is actually the doing of those politicians who are supported by the working man and organized labor whose political land economic policies maximize inflation! What causes inflation? The 'government printing presses. Why do they do it? So they will have more to spend. Thus inflation is a process by which purchasing power is shifted from the middle and lower classes, who have their savings in fixed dollar investments, to the upper classes who have the bulk of their wealth in equities and natural resources. And thus we get to the heart of the problem. Van Home correctly says "the law (government) is generous in its exemptions." You got a vote to sell? We got an exemption for you! Dan Jordan Park City A big hand for the transportation director Dear Editor: Congratulations Kay, for the fantastic fantas-tic performance of the job you "volunteered" for this past winter. Perhaps City Hall may now realize that we do, in fact, have very capable people right here in town to tackle even the toughest of jobs. The buses were always on schedule, and all the drivers very courteous. The opinions of the Parkites and the tourists would be much the same as mine. When the buses are running, I always ride them and this year I heard only two complaints (really unfounded). Quite a record for you, Kay. I feel so sorry for the working people and the school-age children hitchhiking. hitch-hiking. But I'm afraid we might be back to that again until the ski tourists come back into town. What a crime! I sincerely hope City Hall and all the citizens of Park City recognize and appreciate the outstanding contribution contribu-tion you have made to our town.
