Eric Hays Memorial Race draws top talent to Park City by David Hampshire If you were a ski racer looking for a good "points" race, then Park City was the place to be last weekend. First of all, there was Kathy Kreiner, whose a-chievements a-chievements include a gold medal in the 1976 Olympics and a first place in giant slalom in the recent NCAA championships in Bozeman, Montana. Then there was Bente Dahlum, who finished second se-cond to Kreiner in that NCAA race and who also has a Europa Cup win to her credit. To this field was added Park City's Roxanne Toly, a former World Cup competitor competi-tor and current point leader in the pro division of the Park City Town Race series. For a little youth, there were two of the top JI (16-and (16-and 17-year old) ski racers in the country: Tori Pillinger of Park City, winner of the combined title as the best overall s' ier at the 1983 JI Junior Olympics, and Adele Allender of Sun Valley, who took second and third in downhill in that same series of races. It was, in the words of Park City Ski Team coach Jim Clifford, "pretty tough company." And that says nothing about the competition in the men's race, wincii inciuueu Andy Luhn of the U.S. Ski Team, former University of Utah racer Scott Sanchez, who appeared on the World Cup tour this winter, and several other college-caliber racers. "Those were probably the best point races we've had in the Intermountain Division this year," Clifford observed. ob-served. The event was the second annual Eric Hays Memorial Race which is already drawing draw-ing skiers from all over the western states. It was held Saturday and Sunday on the Park City Ski Area's Ladies G.S. run. Adding to the calibre of the competition was the condition condi-tion of the course itself. "It was by far the best I've ever seen that hill," Clifford said. "You couldn't ask for better race conditions." Clifford said that, because the course held up so well, racers who started well back in the pack had a good chance to finish high up in the standings. The awards for the combined com-bined winners (with the best overall performance in the two races) went to two foreign-born skiers who now represent the University of Utah: Bente Dahlum, a native of Sweden, and David Roth, who hails from Ontario, On-tario, Canada. Dahlum finished second behind Adele Allender in Saturday's race, but was the class of the competition Sunday, defeating teammate Kathy Kreiner by i. seconds. se-conds. Roth was a big winner on Saturday, more than two seconds faster than Andy Luhn. However, he slipped to second Sunday behind Scott Sanchez. Among the local contingent, contin-gent, Tori Pillinger had the best overall performance, finishing fourth behind Intermountain Inter-mountain rival Allender on Saturday, then moving up to third, ahead of Allender, on Sunday. Roxanne Toly also put together four consistent runs, finishing sixth Saturday Satur-day and seventh Sunday. In the men's races, the top local performance came from Jason Lawson, who is still competing in the JII ( 14-and 14-and 15 year old) bracket. Lawson finished 11th Saturday, Satur-day, ahead of all but one of the JI competitors. "He didn't ski quite as well as he did at the Junior Olympics," Clifford said. "But he's starting to ski real consistent." Scott Williams, another Park City resident, ran into trouble on Saturday but came back to finish 12th Si.i T.iy. The schedule originally called for Solitude to host the Tribune Classic Saturday, then hold a race of its own Sunday. However, Big Cottonwood Canyon was closed by avalanches ava-lanches Saturday, forcing both races to be held Sunday. "It was a long day," observed Park City coach Patti Formichelli. "It was like 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m... It was kind of hard to win one race, then get pumped up for the other." Formichelli said that one of the outstanding Park City performers of the day was nine-year-old Heather Circo, who is technically a JV skier but is competing in the JIV class (for 10- and 11-year olds) because of the two-trophy two-trophy rule, which prevents a skier from collecting more than two first-place trophies in any one age group. "It's a ridiculous rule, and hopefully once and for all we're going to get rid of it," Formichelli said. "I've been battling it for years." The rule didn't seem to bother Heather Circo Saturday. Satur-day. Not only did she compete against the older skiers, she beat all of them in the first race of the day. "She does not hang back at all," Formichelli said. In the Tribune Classic, Park City's Tyler Tebbs bounced back from a disappointing disap-pointing performance at the Junior Olympics to win first place among the JIII (12-and (12-and 13-year-old) boys. The Park City JIII boys showed their strength by winning three of the top five places in the Tribune Classic and four of the top five in the Solitude race which preceded it. One of the classic duels of the day came between Park City's Stephanie Palmer and Solitude's Kristina Kjelds-berg. Kjelds-berg. Kjeldsberg drew first blood by winning the first race and was leading after the first run of the Tribune Classic. However, Palmer's second run was fast enough to give her the first-place trophy by about one tenth of a second. Other outstanding performances perfor-mances came from Bret Johnson, winner of the opening race for the JIII boys, and C.J. Baltz, who captured fourth place among the JIV boys in the Tribune Classic. For more results, please turn to the Scoreboard section. sec-tion. There will be no races for the members of the Park City Ski Team thiq weekend. However, the schedule will resume next week when the older members of the team leave for the Western Regional Re-gional Spring Series in Nevada. The younger skiers will wrap up their season with the divisional champ-pionships champ-pionships at Snowbird April 9 and 10.
