Citizen of the Year Award goes to Park City EMTs Park City News Thursday, March 10, 1983 Page A 13 This year, the Rotary Club's award for Citizen of the Year didn't go to one Parkite, but 14. Unfortunately, Unfortunate-ly, not all of them could stick around for the Tuesday afternoon dinner where the award was given. Several had to leave, between bites, for an emergency call. But, after all, that's the most important part of the story behind the Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). It's the reason they were given the Rotary award. "They can and do get calls at any time of the day," said Steve Coontz, who coordinated coordina-ted the nomination and selection process for Rotary. "They are a voluntary group who give of their own time to provide a critical service. They have saved lives. And basically they go without recognition until someone has a heart attack, or some other emergency arises." The award-winners are: Jim Bacon, Rick Barnes, Jeff Birrenkott, Kelly Dyer, Kelly Gee, Curt Graf, Mike Karnas, Robert Peters, Joanne Jo-anne Pillinger, Mike Reynolds, Rey-nolds, Jim Santy, Tom Shellenberger, Sally White, and Jim White. The award is given each year by Rotary to that citizen who typifies the club's slogan of "service above self." The first presentation pre-sentation was made last year to Park City's unofficial historian, Bea Kummer. Locals were invited, in radio and newspaper notices, no-tices, to make anonymous nominations. Coontz had the job of collecting the entries, reviewing them, and submitting submit-ting them to the Rotary board to make the choice. Usually, the nominations are anonymous. But in this case, we know the proud person who submitted the entry-the EMT coordinator, Suzanne Shellenberger! Recalled Shellenberger, "I said I knew a bunch of people whose chins get on the ground all the time." Shellenberger, who is paid by Holy Cross, said her nomination wasn't intended to be self-serving. "I nominated them because be-cause I work with them and I think they deserve that award." A group award is a little unorthodox, when the award is only two years old. Will Rotary follow the example of "Time" which selected the computer ft "Man of the Year"? Will the Rotary prize go next year to a well-oiled snowplow? "I don't think we're going in that direction," said Coontz.
