Show Thursday, October 11, 1979 Page 9 Carrier Service Nixed Park City may be erowinc too big and fast for some residents but the U.S. Postal Service says the town is still too underdeveloped to qualify quali-fy for city carrier service. Last week a city carrier qualifying survey was conducted con-ducted by the Salt Lake City Sectional Center at the request of Park City Postmaster Post-master Bryon Johnson. A negative survey finding eliminated a possible solution solu-tion to the problem of incorrect mail addressing that now plagues postal clerks here. Johnson reports that 1,000 pieces of incorrectly addressed ad-dressed mail arrives at the Park City Post Office daily. Most of the problem stems from the omission of box numbers on the address, making the sorting of local mail more time consuming and sometimes impossible. Much of incorrectly addressed ad-dressed mail belongs to old time Parkites whose names only the veteran clerks can connect with the right box number. Says Johnson: "If we had qualified for carrier service then we could deliver mail by address rather than by name and P.O. box, but for now we are faced with sorting incorrectly addressed ad-dressed mail... that costs us an extra 50 hours of work a week." Compounding the difficulty is the rapid growth of Park City. Mail volume has grown to 57,000 weekly pieces, 140 percent more than last year. Because of the limited number num-ber of boxes, many are rented by two or more people and each year 1,400 of these boxes change hands, making an up-to-date list of renters difficult to maintain. "I'm personally committed to delivering all the mail possible... but I need the help of the residents," says Johnson, John-son, adding that he has seen some positive results from letter campaigns to patrons and address corrections that the utility companies and local hanks gather from customers and forward to the post office. Johnson speculates that it will only be a couple of years before Park City has carrier service. But even then the old section of town, with steep, winding streets that impair motorized travel in winter, may be excluded. When lemonade stands pi this route you know life tles are changing.
