Citing potential traffic congestion, the Park City Planning Commission last week denied 7-Eleven's application to locate a new store at the junction of Empire Em-pire and Park Avenues. Do you think the commission was justitied in its action? Mike Cooper Only if Skylab lands there. Debbie Richardson I don't really see what it would hurt to locate a new 7-Eleven at the intersection. inter-section. Nan Chalet I don't think another 7-Eleven would pose extra traffic problems but I prefer seeing local stores getting the business rather than another chain store. Kerri McKinney Yes, the commission was justified. Winter traffic in that area is bad enough, another 7-Eleven would just add to the problem. Lucy Walkup I agree with the commission. Besides, Park City is becoming too commercial. Shelly Burdick I don't think we need another 7-Eleven 7-Eleven in Park City, so the commission's decision is fine with me. : r Letters feEdibr (Only signed letters will be published.) . One of the Finest Debbie Richardson Kerri McKinney Editor: I think anyone who was in town for the fourth will agree that this year's celebration was one of the finest in recent years. The town turned tur-ned out in record numbers and for once we even had more spectators than participants par-ticipants in the parade. A big part of the credit for the success of the day goes to the newly formed Jaycees group. These young men, all busy professional people took time out from their more than busy schedules (isn't it always the busiest people who get the most done?) to insure that Park City once again celebrated the Fourth of July the "Old Fashioned" way, with activities ac-tivities for everyone all through the day. We applaud Steve Holcomb and his Jaycees group for their great job. They say they are already working on next year's parade and promise it will be the best ever (did they really mention elephants?) ele-phants?) The nicest thing about this year's celebration though, was that it truly was a community com-munity day. The Recreation Department, as usual, put in double time and a fair share of money too to provide the town with the skateboard contest and the great band The Fertile Dire Band, yet that played for the Tent Event. And, speaking of the Tent Event, that was the perfect finale to a fun filled, family day and the Chamber wholeheartedly wholehear-tedly thanks Bob Wells and his crew for putting up the tent, Mayor Green for being the perfect host, Tina Lewis and Bob Wells for officially inaugurating Park City's Big Top, Bea Kummer for adding ad-ding the perfect touch of history to the day, Jere Calmes and the Park City Pre School for the cake auction, auc-tion, Joanne "The General" Scow for calling the square dances, the folks from the Club for providing food for the hungry hordes and Everyong big and little, old and young, who came and celebrated together on a very special day. Park City Chamber of Commerce Disturbing Problems Shelly Burdick BOARD OF ADJUSTMENTS The Board of Adjustment has been asked to meet to consider a variance of a side yard setback set-back requirement of one Residential Development-Medium Density (RDM) District of The Park City Land Management Code. The applicant owns Lot 93, Prospector Park, Phase II on Cochise Court. Because of the narrow shape of the lot and the size of their proposed building, the applicant is requesting a 10.7 foot side yard setback for each side. The Board of Adjustment has therefore been asked to grant the proponents the requested variance. The request comes under the authority of the Board as described in 10-9-12 and 10-9-14 of the Utah Code Annotated 1953 and also as described in Chapter XIII of the l ark City Land Management Code. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Softball Commission: We, the members of the Women's Softball league, are addressing this letter to you with profound hopes that you will carefully consider our message. Many disturbing problems exist which we feel very seriously affect the performances perfor-mances and morale of the teams. An issue that comes to mind involves the selection of umpires. Certainly you are aware of our efforts to raise funds so that monies would be available for the hiring of umpires. The people making decisions at our games are definitely not ' qualified. A case in point, our last game, when the event was umpired by two men pulled from the bench. They readily demonstrated their lack of knowledge of the rules of softball. At home plate, the umpire reversed his decision on at least five pitches ! Something is radically wrong with the scheduling procedures. There seems to be no valid reason why we cannot finish a game. It is not uncommon for us to start a half hour late. There is no excuse for this and does nothing but contribute to utter ut-ter frustration and complete disenchantment. Your practice of holding sessions prior to game for the purpose of discussing our behavior andor personality faults is definitely inconsistent incon-sistent with good psychological approach. We would appreciate some changes in this disruptive routine. Perhaps, it would be timely to have a meeting with you, at your earliest 'convenience, to discuss these issues. It would afford 11 'is' ah opportunity to further enlighten you. We are very dedicated members of the Silver King Club and would like to be able to continue our role as a team in a productive produc-tive and enthusiastic manner. man-ner. This can readily be done by relieving the existing tensions. ten-sions. An early reply would be appreciated. Very truly yours, The Members of the Silver Kinks Softball Club What's Happening? Dear Editor: What's happening at the Art Center? One of the finest Arts Festivals in the country, coun-try, that's what! In reply to Mr. James' letter of last week, I am sorry he is so misinformed concerning Arts Festival procedures and realities. The Kimball Art Center's role in this year's Festival is that of financial sponsor. The Art Center is "putting up" all of the front money for the Festival's operation, just as the Chamber of Commerce Com-merce has sponsored the Festival in previous years. The Kimball Art Center's Board of Trustees had nothing whatsoever to do with jury selection or Festival policy. The jury was selected by the Arts Festival Executive Committeeall Commit-teeall Parkites who also set policies and procedures for the Festival. This year the jury consisted of seven people, all Park City residents, and many of whom were involved with the first Festivals, years ago. This group spent three grueling days and nights carefully screening each applicants' ap-plicants' slides. Jurying was done solely by number. No other information about the applicant was available to the jury. They did not know if the applicant was young or Continued On Page 11 WHY NOT... j get the news by mail?
