That's how the Pony Express Ex-press enlisted riders back in 1860. And it remains a part of the requirement for today's adventuresome "cowboys" who want to relive the past on the 1978 Pony Express re-ride over the original route between Salt Lake City and Sacramento. The National Pony Express Ex-press Association, a nonprofit non-profit historical and educational educa-tional organization, is staging sta-ging the ride beginning as near as possible to the original home station in Salt Lake City on July 1 at 8 a.m. and finishing 730 miles away in Sacramento on July 4 at 6:30 p.m. For the past twelve years, re-rides have been made across California only. The expansion to Salt Lake City is part of a plan to re-ride the entire 1,960 miles from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacra mento, California in 1980. Relays will be approximately approxi-mately five miles each with one rider and horse covering that distance in thirty minutes. Forty men and horses are needed to carry the mail from Salt Lake City to the border of Nevada and eighty are needed for Nevada. Nev-ada. The remaining hundred miles through California will involve 28 men and horses. Specially designed Pony Express Commemorative letters bearing a vignette of an unusual place or event on the Pony Express Trail, and sold in advance of the ride for $5, will be carried over the entire route. Riders wishing to participate partici-pate must be "responsible, "respons-ible, of good character and willing to take and abide by the Pony Express Oath." For more information contact: con-tact: National Pony Express Association, P.O. Box 236, Pollock Pines, California 95726. Three men's teams and three ladies' teams remained in the ranks of the undefeated last week as preseason favorites sat atop the slowpitch Softball standings. Division I In Division I of the men's league, the Alamo Bums came from behind in the bottom of the seventh to survive a scare from the Park City Players. The Bums, down by four before their last at bats, scored the tying run on a disputed call at home and then pushed across the winning score on an errant throw to second during the same action. The win kept the Bums in a tie for the division lead with the Mad Jacks. The Mad Jacks, with the same 4-0 record as the Alamo, downed the Big Shots on . Wednesday and then posted a convincing 21-8 victory over the previously unbeaten Brothers squad on Sunday. In other action, Doc's Back Door rebounded from a loss to Mt. Fishery to down Mt. Realty and claim a third place tie with the Drywallers. Following two opening losses, the Drywallers posted back-to-back wins over the Outlaws and Woodhaus for a .500 percentage. Mt. Fishery was 2-1 on the week, beating Doc's and Wasatch Homes after losing to the Alamo. The Big Shots broke into the win column with a victory over the tailspinning Old Men but the Outlaws have yet to make penetration. Division II - - - Spencer's remained the only undefeated Division II team. Yet to be extended, the Autos ran over the Old Men and the Outlaws. These hit and run tactics pushed Spencer's record to 5-0, the best in either division. The Brothers' loss to the Mad Jacks dropped them into second place, just ahead of Mt. Realty and the Park City Players. Mt. Realty downed Wasatch Homes before succumbing to Doc's while the Players preceded their loss to the Alamo with a win over the Woodhaus. The Old Men, after a strong opening game win over Mt. Realty, are apparently feeling their age. They now have lost three in a row, bowing to Spencer's and the Big Shots this past week. Tied with the Old Men at 1-3 1-3 is the Woodhaus, which Outlaws for the virginity award is Wasatch Homes which must be waiting for just the right moment to score. Ladies League On the distaff side, the Red Banjo, Hutton and The Club are not finding it difficult to score. All maintained their unblemished records through week's action. The Red Banjo ladies strung two more victories on their win streak, downing the Cozy 15 to 10 and then meating the Prospector Sirloin challenge, 24-8. The Hutton Hustlers made hamburger of the Double E, knocking them on their buns with a 20 to 2 spread, while the Club drubbed the Spa 19-0 19-0 and then outlasted Park West 21-19 in extra innings. Prior to their loss to the Red Banjo, the Prospector grilled Park West 25-14 while the Rusty Nail upped their record to 2-1 , hammering out consecutive wins over the Alamo and the Spa.
