Show Bill clarifies split school Amie Rose Utah Velley Staff After unsuccessfully trying try-ing to split the Alpine School District last year, 'Rep. Dave Cox, R-Lehi, decided he needed to make some changes to the law allowing school districts to split. Cox's bill was held in the House Education Committee Friday morning, after lawmakers law-makers expressed concerns about some of his proposed changes. After the decision, Cox said he would work on an amendment addressing the committee's problems. Cox was one of five sponsors spon-sors of a petition to split the Alpine School District along the Lehi High School boundaries bound-aries last year. Cox sponsored spon-sored the legislation making school district splits possible and served on the ad hoc committee that studied the split. He's also a teacher at Sego Lily Elementary School in Lehi. The bill would clear up the confusion over what would happen to school employees when districts split. It would allow them to transfer between the two districts for a year and require the new district to adopt the contracts from the old district. But Marcus Phillips, a Lehi resident who opposed the Alpine School District split, says the bill makes too many changes. "House bill 63 guts the original safeguards intended in law," he said. The legislation would also take out parts of the splitting process. It would require county commissions to appoint and pay for an ad hoc committee to study a district dis-trict split after a petition has been submitted and certified but wouldn't allow the commissioners com-missioners to vote on the issue before or after it's ztunnsG Medical Total Adult Primary Care Internal Medicine 36 N. 1 100 E., Suite D American Fork 12 block south of AF Hospital Specializing in: Depression, Anxiety Fibromyalgia Chronic Fatigue Skin Care: Botox Wrinkle Fillers Microdermabrasion Hypertension Weight Control Hormone Replacement Therapy Physicals - Premarital, Yearly, Mission Chronic Pain Diabetes, Heart and Lung Disease Adult Immunizations V Siwdofaina, in Engine Rebuilding! It also wouldn't allow the ad hoc committee to make a recommendation rec-ommendation on a proposed split and would eliminate a 45-day public comment period. peri-od. The proposal to split the Alpine School District died when Utah County commissioners commis-sioners voted 2-1 not to put it on the ballot after getting a recommendation against the split from the ad hoc committee. com-mittee. Two people should not prevent 30,000 to 45,000 people from having that choice," Cox said of his proposal pro-posal to take county commissioners commis-sioners out of the process. And, an ad hoc committee shouldn't make a recommendation recommen-dation because a group opposed to the split could beat up on them and try to influence their decision, he said. Instead, the media could digest the information and get it out to voters. If a district split proposal goes on the ballot, the media would likely sponsor debates on the issue, Cox said. In the Alpine School District case, the local media refused to sponsor debates before it was on the ballot, and then the county commissioners prevented pre-vented that from happening. Rhonda Rose, representing represent-ing the state Parent Teacher Association, said the association associa-tion believes public input should be allowed all through the district splitting process, and the media shouldn't be the only way voters get information about a proposed split. The Mountainview Corridor Corri-dor is a proposed transportation trans-portation plan for the west side of Salt Lake valley which will come into Utah County on the west side of the Jordan River and eventually even-tually connect with 1-15. One option of the initial corridor proposal would have realigned the southwest south-west quadrant of the new LindonPleasant Grove 1-15 interchange, making access to the quadrant more difficult diffi-cult for companies wanting to locate there. Lindon and Pleasant Grove officials suggested cutting across the top of the properties along 400 North instead. UDOT agreed and sketched in the new route on an aerial photograph.
