Show Track athletes continue improvement Pleasant Grove Review - Thursday. February 3, 2005 - Page 7 Beky Beaton The Pleasant Grove High School track and field teams did not disappoint as they traveled to the first prep indoor meet at BYU'u Smith Field House in years Jan. 21-22. According to coach John Kernan, the Vikings placed in almost all of the events they entered, set many seasonal sea-sonal and personal bests, and competed with a lot of heart. "I'm always amazed by what our student-athletes can do when they set their minds to it," said Kernan. "It really was nice to have a meet close to home where we didn't have to travel too far, and the parents and families could see our Vikings compete. It does make a difference." In the girls division, place winners for the Vikings included Kaylee McEwan in the long jump, who came in second at 15'7". In the 4X332 meter relay, McEwan, Calli Bent-ley, Bent-ley, Jessica Kernan and Sarah Goodrich combined for second place. In the 800 meters, Goodrich took fourth with a new personal record of 2:30.23. In the 400 meters, McEwan placed fourth with a mark of 1:03.80. Rounding out the official place winners for the Vikings were Bentley, who was eighth in both the 60-meter 60-meter sprint (8.38) and 200 meters (28M); McEwan in the high jump (4'8") and Goodrich in the mile run with another personal record of 5:59.17. Kernan didn't place in the 60-meter hurdles, but she ran a new personal mark of 11.87 seconds in the event. On the boys team, Beau Bond placed third in shot put at 49 4 14". Placing fifth were Troy Bailey in the 200 meters with a season best of 23.80 seconds, and the boys 4X332-meter relay team of Bailey, Casey Saunders, Saun-ders, Brandon Manwill and David Lindow with a time of 2:57.47. Manwill also competed in the mile, running a personal person-al record time of 5:17.27. "I can't say enough about our teams," Coach Kernan added. "They just continue to get better, and against such tough competition. These meets have over 30 high schools attending, including some from Wyoming, Idaho and Nevada. Neva-da. "Some of these indoor meets seem tougher than our biggest outdoor meets, yet our kids continue to place and improve. Dean Von Memmott Sports Com.wona.ui First-year Pleasant Grove swim coach Ann Vimahi is going to focus on her own small contingent at this weekend's state swim meet in BYU's Richards Building. "We're not going to care about the other schools at the meet," the coach said. "We're only going to be worried about how we do on our times at the meet." Vimahi said that through the course of the season, her swimmers have been improving their times. She said she hoped Pleasant Grove's relay teams "do well enough at the meet," She said the teams that will be battling hard for the girls title will include American Amer-ican Fork, East and Logan. Girls representing the Vikings will be Alliesha Oneal, Samantha, Borstadt, Sarah Hughes, Brooke Jordan, Jor-dan, Emma Myers, Rachael Rawlins, Amy Argylc and Alisha Clayson. Boys representing Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove will be Darren Dickerson, B.J. Adams, Shaun Carlcy, Dallin Nelson, Nel-son, Jordan Day, Brennan Lethridge, Jeff Nielson, Ryan Muir and Kyle Lid- dard. Most of the kids in both groups will compete in relay races. Oneal is also scheduled to compete in the girls 200-yard 200-yard individual medley. Adams is to compete in the boys 200-yard individual individ-ual medley and 100-yard backstroke. Carlcy qualified in the 100-yard butterfly, and Dickerson and Nielson in the 100-yard backstroke. Pleasant Grove will have teams in the boys' 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley med-ley relays, as well as the girls 200-yard freestyle relay. Viking coach Brock Moore said, "We had most of our seniors sen-iors wrestle against them. Our varsity wrestled great, but our seniors didn't." The meet stayed so tight that it was not decided until Teddy Owens' match when the score was tied at 33. Moore said, Teddy got a pin in his match to win it for us." The Vikings will compete at the Region 7 tournament today at Lone Peak- They are expected to repeat as region champions.
