Show Thursday, November 22, 2007 SPRINGVILLE HERALD ell honored with Service in Excellence Award f KichardDayb Richard Daybell makes things happen at Mapleton Jr. High. Because of his devotion to the school, He was honored recently with the Service in Excellence Award. In thinking about giving this year's service award, a recent interview with the public relations director direc-tor of the Waldorf-Astoria, one of New York's finest and nost luxurious hotels, came to the minds of the PTA. During this interview, he was aksed how he is able to deal with hundreds of wedding, conferences, con-ferences, galas and corpo-rae corpo-rae meetings with such a lack of complaint from his guests. His answer was this, "I have hired managers who can create and offer solutions. solu-tions. When a guest thinks they have a concern, they are immediately given a solution and there is no problem." Richard Daybell is such a manager. Something that isn't functioning or not functioning as expected or is supposed to get fixed, happens with a smile from Daybell and one of his favorite fa-vorite quotes, "We will just make it happen." Nobody can ever truly appreciate the enormous smount of work and effort that went into constructing construct-ing a new junior high, moving an entire faculty and then dealing with all of the little problems that come along with a new buiding. The reason why most of us have never really given any of this much thought is due to the fact that Daybell handles it behind the scenes. When someone thinks there is a problem, he is always there to listen, reassure, re-assure, offer a solution and then take care of it. suddenly there is no more problem. According to the faculty, fac-ulty, Daybell is an integral part of the staff, but more than that, he is a good friend who truly cares about what he does and who he is working with. As much as he hates to be in the spotlight, it is time to acknowledge all that he has done and continues to do the school. True happiness is not attained at-tained through self -gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose. - Helen Keller f n 5 bedrooms, 2 full baths, family room wstove, storage room, new paint and flooring thruout, mostly fenced, .22 acre lot. Matt Barber With its fantasy world backdrop, sympathetic talking animals and extravagant ex-travagant battle scenes, the new movie, "The Golden Compass," may resemble C.S. Lewis' "The Chronicles of Narnia." But parents be advised, this film - which is very intentionally being marketed toward children -is nothing of the sort. "The Golden Compass" was created with the benefit ben-efit of a multimillion dollar dol-lar budget and big name actors such as Nicole Kid-. man, Kevin Bacon and jSam Elliot. It opens December Decem-ber 7, and promises to be action-packed and visually stunning in the, epic tradition tradi-tion of Narnia or "The Lord of the Rings." But upon closer review, it becomes abundantly clear that both this movie and the man behind it have a very certain anti-Christian axe to grind. Based on the first of three secular humanist children's books by avowed atheist and British author Phillip Pullman, "The Golden Compass" Com-pass" provides the opening "down with God" salvo in the author's His Dark Materials Ma-terials trilogy. Pullman leaves little question ques-tion as to his books', ual-ity.'" ual-ity.'" Ironically, Pullman's confident pronouncement that there is no God appears ap-pears to take an exclusive backseat to his hatred for the very God he denies. M50 rrr.TTTT Daybell killing God," he told The Sydney Morning Herald in a 2003 interview. And in the trilogy's final offering, "The Amber Spyglass," he does just that - he knocks off the Almighty in a delusional de-lusional fit of grandeur. Pullman's books drip with moral relativism, that deceptively de-ceptively sweet, yet fruitless fruit-less nectar of the secular humanist. His portrayal of God -which is clearly intended to personify the Christian church - is that of an evil authoritarian who spitefully spiteful-ly stifles human creativity, arbitrarily punishing mankind man-kind for very naturally and properly entertaining base impulses with unfettered unfet-tered license. In a telling and pivotal moment in the series, a former nun named "Mary Malone," who is a central character, pdignantly reflects re-flects upon her realization that God does not exist: "There's no one to fret, no one to condemn, no one to bless me for being a good girl, no one to punish me for being wicked.Heaven was empty. I didn't know whether God had died, or whether there never had been a God at all." And isn't that what atheism is all about, really? Our fallen desire to have, "no one to punish us for being wicked." wick-ed."
