SHS Band competes in California Jessica Ahhing 1 " SHS STAFF WRITER The SHS Marching Band recently went to a competition competi-tion in Northern California. Ms. Hart, SHS administrator administra-tor Mr, Robins and some, parents went along to make sure that everything went smoothly. " , ; The long ride to California Califor-nia took fifteen hours. The group left on Halloween at 10 p.m. and came back on Sunday, around nooa The students had plenty of time to talk and get to know one another, and they came up with creative cre-ative ways to pass the time. The drummers all drummed on the back of the bus seats, and sometimes they drummed so hard, dust came off the seats. The group traveled on a charter buses with pretty cool bus drivers. They stopped at an elementary el-ementary school in Nevada on the way to California. The school was very small and on the side of a mountain. In California, they went to a high school and played during dur-ing a half time show. The high school didn't have a marching band of their own, and one of the chaperones had graduated from that high school. The SHS band did a great job at the competition; the SHS Color Guard took 1st "a-, in class, the SHS Drum line took 1st in class, and the SHS Band took 2nd overall. In addition to making music and competing, the students were able to visit a few places of interest in California, Cali-fornia, and they managed to have quite a bit of fun. When the group was in downtown San Francisco, taking a bus tour, they played this game called the "yellow bus game." The game is from Sweden, arid one of the band managers manag-ers is from Sweden. Every time you see a yellow vehicle, vehi-cle, you hit someone and say "yellow bus" or "yellow car" or "yellow" whatever it is. In San Francisco, they 4- J 4-1 I I wcm iu uie I Golden Gate 1 Bridge and 1 walked across (through a cool, thick fog). They also visited Fisherman's Warf and Pier 39, and at Fisherman's Warf there were sea lions and other exotic ex-otic sea creatures. The students also went to i the beach and played football foot-ball on the beach and played in the ocean. There were a lot of surfers there catching some waves. The surfers taught the band members that when you hold out your thumb and your pinky finger, fin-ger, and put the other three down, it means "hang loose". For some reason the tide was very low anc so students were able to see some amazing amaz-ing starfish and sea crea- . tures. They also saw a baby turtle and plenty of seagulls. They also went to the redwoods; red-woods; it dumped rain when they were at the redwoods, but they walked through the impressive trees anyway. BRQWNfS CHEVROLET . !aflt - r-.L.... i t c UN.
