Dan Gray, a licensed clinical social worker specializing in addictions ad-dictions counseling, shared an hour-long presentation of what constitutes pornography, how it affects viewer's brain chemistries, chem-istries, and what parents and students can do to protect themselves them-selves from falling victim to this vice. A question and answer session ses-sion for the parents and students followed Gray's presentation. This is the third of a number num-ber of workshops scheduled across Utah in 2007. The first two recently took place at Alta and Payson high schools with a fourth planned at Timpv'iew High School on January 11, 2007. , "This is a difficult topic to dis cuss," said Cindy Moreno, president presi-dent of Communities for Decency. Decen-cy. "All participants have a personal per-sonal story about how pornography pornog-raphy is hurting someone they know and they are searching for tools and strategies to help. That's what these workshops are all about." Sponsored by the Utah Parent Teachers Association, Communities Commu-nities for Decency, and the Utah Coalition Against Pornography, the workshops are designed to open dialogue between parents and children and include a DVD entitled: "Pornography - The Great Lie," and two booklets that discuss healthy sexuality and signs of addiction. ; Event organizers said the questions and statements made by workshop participants paint a picture of the damage pornography pornog-raphy is inflicting on the community. commu-nity. All start with stories about how pornography is ruining marriages, how their children are accessing it from school computers and how the children hide it from parents, to how a woman was trying to help her father overcome the addiction. The stories are always followed fol-lowed by pleas of help to know how to eradicate this problem in their lives. "People are desperate and don't know where to turn," said Moreno. "They need to know there is hope and that they can be helped. Some people think they can never get out of it, but they can. That's what these workshops are all about."
