Show Thursday, February 2006 SPRINGVILLE HERALD 11 f jj mmw n iiiMigiiiiraiftIiitlfr 1 Lady Red Devils beat Orem Tigers C.J. Gandolfo ' SH5 STAFF WRITER On Thursday, Jan. 27, the Springville High Girls' Bas-, Bas-, ketball team had a fierce match up with the more than formidable Orem Tigers. Our Lady Red Devils played amazingly and came out on . top by a margin of nearly double digits with a final score of 46 to 35. The team's top scorer Cori .Nielson had a whopping 18 points and 14 rebounds. Another An-other key player was Niki Campbell with 8 points. The Lady Tigers played a tough game all throughout the first quarter, holding the Devils to under 20 points, and even taking the lead for a majority of the two quarters. quar-ters. But the Devils came through in the clutch and exploded ex-ploded in the second half with an impressive 30 points, blowing the Tigers right out of the water. Lindsey Treasure, a shooting shoot-ing guard for the Devils said, "Our defense was awesome and that opened up tons of opportunities for our offense to dominate on our side of the court. We also passed the ball very well and kept our turnovers to minimum. Overall Over-all we just played a really good game." The Devils also had a game on Friday, Jan. 31, against Red Devils score win over Pioneers Jordan Allen SHS STAFF WRITER v The Red Devils (10-7, 3-3) were without their leading scorer, Preston Eaton, Friday Fri-day as they beat the Lehi Pioneers Pio-neers (5-12, 0-6) 58-52. Eaton was controversially ejected from the last game against Timpview earlier that week, and he had to sit out this game as well. But the Devils did fine without Eaton, although somewhat out of sync on offense, of-fense, they pulled together to play great team and individual individ-ual defense, allowing the Pioneers Pio-neers to score only two points in the first quarter and 15 in the first half, sending the teams into the locker Clark Fredrickson, son of Leon and Deborah Fredrickson, was selected se-lected as the Sophomore Offensive Offen-sive Player of the Week for his outstanding performance in the win against Lehi. asp J iciwJ : ,. -J , VTS j , K f F h ( KfiV. -f h.u t (t ' Nick Alvey, son of Scott Alvey and s . Our girls weren't quite as fortunate as they were with the Tigers as they were defeated de-feated by Timpview with a quite devastating score of 38 to 65. Timpview played a great fundamental game. Crisp passes, gorgeous shots and devastating defense lead to their victory over the Devils. Timpview's leading scorer, Kaurusi, had an incredible 24 points. However, Springville didn't did-n't play all that bad. Cori Nielson, the team's leading scorer yet again, had a stunning stun-ning 15 points. Ashley Erick-son Erick-son and Macall Radford also contributed with a combined 10 points. Lindsey Treasure said, comparing Timpview's game with the earlier Orem game, "Well pretty much the simplest sim-plest way to put it is, we didn't did-n't do our jobs. Shots didn't drop, passes were stolen, and free throws were missed. And I think the biggest part was that they were just a really good team. But I know we're capable of playing better than that. And I know we will next game." I also asked her how she felt about the team's season and the progress they've See Orem page 12 room at halftime with the score of 28-15. Lehi came out and started to slowly get back into the game, making a run for it in the fourth quarter and getting get-ting within two, but the Red Devils pulled it through and proved that they can win a tight one, even without Eaton. Nick Alvey led the Devils with a triple-double, recording record-ing 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 blocks, making his presence felt in the key. Merkley also had 14, and Foster chipped in 13. Silva led the Pioneers with 12. Nick Alvey, son of Scott Alvey and Sherri Alvey, was selected as the Varsity Co-Offensive Player of the Week and Co-Defensive Player of the Week for his outstanding performance per-formance in the win against Lehi.
