Being on stage was easy because I knew my family and friends were in the audience hoping I would do great." Why did you decide to participate par-ticipate in the pageant? "I wanted to try to be the best self I could be and the Mrs. Utah Pageant created the venue I needed to reach the goals I made. I also wanted want-ed to wear the beautiful evening gown, what more could a girl want?" What do you do now as Mrs. Utah? Megan Bohl was chosen cho-sen for the month of September. Septem-ber. Megan is a very active 8th grade girl who loves to long board, go shopping at the mall with her friends, and watch movies like "The Italian Ital-ian Job" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." Some of the bands she likes to listen to are slipknot, slip-knot, and old school bands like the Steve Miller band. She loves chocolate and BYU. One day she wants to be a science teacher. Megan Bohl Smile, it takes little effort and goes a long way Amberly Asay SJHS STAFF WRITER A smile can go a long way. One smile can change a person's per-son's whole day. A smile lets a person know that they have friends. I know because I moved here from Spanish Fork right before be-fore school started. I didn't know anyone and when someone smiled at me it made me feel happy and that I had some friends. You have all heard this: It takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile. So right now smile, now frown. Which one was easier? For me it is easier to smile. This is a quote about smiling: smil-ing: "A SMILE is an inexpensive inexpen-sive way to improve your looks." -Author unknown. A smile can complete an outfit. You might have the perfect shoes, perfect purse, perfect pants, perfect shirt, perfect hair, and perfect everything, but without a smile the outfit isn't complete. com-plete. Even if you don't think your outfit is great, smile and it will be great. So just smile and you won't believe how much better your life is. Parentteacher conferences at SJHS On Wednesday, Sept. 28th, Springville Junior High School held the first parentteacher conference of the year. We interviewed a couple of teachers on how they thought parentteacher conferences went. We asked U.S history teacher Mr. Bates what he liked best about the conferences. confer-ences. He said "I like the opportunity to meet parents I haven't met before". We also asked Mr. Bates what he disliked, and he said sitting sit-ting in that hard plastic chair he had for five hours. We also interviewed the journalism teacher Mrs. Cunningham, and asked her if she felt that parentteacher conference had been a success. She said, "Yes, it was great to meet some of my student's parents and share the success, suc-cess, of my students." We then asked her what she didn't like about parentteacher conferences. She responded, "My line was too long because I talked too much. I apologize, apolo-gize, next time I will bring a timer." ft Itak 3 i hi mti nimiiriiiiMnriiiiiiifliiM n in On October 7, Art City Elementary's 5th grade students hopped on a bus headed for the Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake. When they arrived they went to the dome theater. The Clark Planetarium's dome theater was the first of its kind in the world. Now there are about 50 to 70 in the world. The theater measures 39 feet tall and 55 feet wide. In the theater students watched and enjoyed (except for the few that got motion sick) two fantastic movies, "Destination Saturn" and "Stars of the Pharaohs." Most kids agreed, the movies were super fun to watch. After lunch, the students looked at the exhibits. There were lots of fun exhibits and things to explore and learn about. Everyone wanted a turn to be on TV to try being a weatherman. They also wanted to crank the handle on the moon slide show, push buttons on the displays, and a favorite exhibit of many of the students was blowing up a star. On the bus ride home, there was a lot of talk about the planetarium and what a fun time they had. By Maddi Dayton and Malary Hatch, 5th grade Spotlight on Mrs. Carpenter at SJHS Courtney Smullin and Stephanie Schultz SJHS STAFF WRITERS Mrs. Carpenter is an eight -grade science teacher at Springville Jr. High School. She lived in Seattle until she was nine and then she moved to Huntsville, Alabama. "I lived there until I started start-ed college at BYU. Alabama was a great place to grow up," she said. But right now she lives in Lindon. Mrs. Carpenter has gone to BYU where she got her BS degree and she obtained her teaching certificate at The University of Tulsa. Mrs. Carpenter has four boys and one girl and two granddaughters. When asked to tell something some-thing interesting about her past, she said, "I was a medical technologist at various var-ious hospitals and clinics before I decided to be a teacher." In her spare time, Mrs. Carpenter likes to play the piano and read. Mrs. Carpenter decided to become a science teacher a long time after she graduated, gradu-ated, and she started teaching teach-ing when she was 38. When asked if she liked teaching Science she said, "I love teaching Science-especially when the students have an 'ah-ha' experience-meaning they really get it. That's totally to-tally exciting." When asked what her least favorite thing about teaching she said one simple sim-ple word, "Grading." We also asked her what her favorite things about SJHS she said, "The students stu-dents and staff and the doughnuts at faculty meetings!" meet-ings!" Mrs. Carpenter also told us some or her plans for this year. "Every year I try to find new material and activities ac-tivities that will help students stu-dents learn the Utah Core Science Curriculum- to make things more interesting interest-ing and memorable," she said. This year, like previous years, the eight graders will be doing a science fair project. We asked Mrs. Carpenter to describe what will happen in detail. "This is the 4th Annual Science Fair at SJHS. This year students stu-dents will have the opportunity opportu-nity to present their project in class during the week of December 5th-9th. Students consider their interests, research re-search science fair ideas and then decide on a question ques-tion they will try to answer through experimentation. By doing experimentation, students discover the importance im-portance of compiling lots of data (not just one time experiment), testing only one variable at a time, controlling con-trolling all aspects of the experiment except the one variable, and ultimately experiencing ex-periencing the success of a new discovery." She even had some advice for the eight graders! "Start soon! There is a poster in my room that says "Warning: Due Dates are closer that they appear." Mrs. Carpenter is a great science teacher and the staff and students are happy hap-py to have her teaching and we appreciate all of the hard work that she is doing!
