Babbitt STAFF WRITER A specialized machine using us-ing cutting-edge medical technology is now available as a treatment alternative for local residents who may be facing surgery to relieve their back pain. Stapel Chiropractic and Spine Pain Relief Center in Springville has recently added a DRX9000 to their office of-fice equipment. This machine is used to treat herniated and degenerative discs in the spine and has been found to significantly reduce back pain in 86 percent of patients. It is only the second such machine to be located in Utah and the only one in Utah County. "This is an alternative to people who are looking at surgery," said Dr. Gordon Stapel, owner of the clinic. The machine can also be used to help those whose back surgery has been unsuccessful. un-successful. "The challenge is, surgery still has about a 70 percent failure rate," Stapel said. "If the surgery failed and there was no fusion, then they're still a candidate" for treatment treat-ment using the DRX9000. Between vertebrae in the back are discs that act as shock absorbers to the bones. These discs, Stapel said, are made of a fibrous ring on the outside and a jelly-like substance in the middle. mid-dle. Having a herniated disc means some of that jelly substance sub-stance has protruded outside the disc, pushing on a nerve and causing pain, numbness or tingling. Common medical treatments treat-ments for this condition can include injections to reduce the inflammation or a nerve block, Stapel said. Eventually, Eventual-ly, surgery may be considered, consid-ered, followed by weeks of rehabilitation and physical therapy. The new machine, which arrived in Springville just over a week ago, uses technology tech-nology to target the area of the spine with the herniated disc. The patient is strapped on to the machine with an upper up-per chest harness and shoulder shoul-der support and the machine eases the vertebrae apart, creating a vacuum between them so the disc can re-centralize. Discs don't get their nutrition nutri-tion from blood flow; rather, they absorb nutrients-from surrounding fluid like a sponge, Stapel said. Discs can dry out - called disc degeneration de-generation - and eventually crack and press on nerves. The treatment from the DRX 9000 allows a disc to access the needed nutrients, he said. A session on the machine takes about 30 minutes, followed fol-lowed with a cold pack and electrical muscle stimulation. The entire visit will take between be-tween 45 minutes and an hour, Stapel said. . Patients receive one treatment treat-ment per day for two weeks. Three treatments a week would then be provided for two weeks, then two sessions ses-sions a week for two weeks. Cost for the entire treatment regimen is approximately $3,500, Stapel said. "To someone who is facing (surgery), this is a lif esaver," Stapel said. The Stapel Chiropractic and Spine Pain Relief Center is located at 269 E. 400 South in Springville.
