Show 12 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, October 13, 2005 r "X J i ' A J .! . f v, f Brandon Mis Named a Down but not out! Commended Student John Van Wagoner SHS STAFF WRITER r Just one week after two stinging losses to Provo and tehi, the Red Devils showed their heart by coming out and destroying Orem and Timpview. They swept Orem in three games and they beat Timpview 3-1. Many teams would have cracked after losing those two emotionally charged matches, but SHS stormed back and are in contention con-tention for a region title. ; A huge showdown is looming loom-ing with the Lady Red Devils foing to Provo on Thursday, . ut just as important is a big region game with Payson on Tuesday. The Lady Red Devils Dev-ils are looking to go undefeated unde-feated on their second go around in region. The Lady Red Devils would still like to see more support from fans. The two things that are holding the Red Devils back right now are consistency and underestimating and overlooking opponents. Even in their recent slump they have beat teams while not playing at the level that they are capable of playing. The Red Devils need to be ready for this week because if they can beat both of these teams and then beat Lehi next Tuesday, they still have an excellent chance of winning win-ning region. If they can do that, they get an easier seed in the region tournament. Senior Cori Nielson says, "Its not gonna be easy, but we are going to beat both Payson and Provo this week." bevils secure their second place spot in Region Caitlin Duncan a. SHS STAFF WRITER ' On Tuesday, the Lady Red Devil soccer team beat the Payson Lions 9-2. Danielle Dearden SHS STAFF WRITER It's a Saturday morning in October, and you wonder why you ever consented con-sented to get up early and miss cartoons on the only day you can sleep in. Especially Es-pecially because be-cause not only have you missed those three extra hours of dreaming, dream-ing, but you are taking an optional test. It's the (Pre liminary SATNational Merit Scholarship Scholar-ship Qualifying Test), and you're looking forward to about four hours of reading, math and writing. Sounds exciting, doesn't it? However, it could be worth it. Take Springville's own Brandon Tullis, for example. ex-ample. Brandon took the 2004 PSATNMSQT, and he ended up doing pretty well, although he didn't know just how well at the time. Brandon Bran-don was named a Commended Commend-ed Student in the 2006 National Na-tional Merit Scholarship Program, Pro-gram, an academic competition competi-tion for recognition and scholarships. Out of 1.3 million mil-lion participants, he achieved one of the 50,000 highest scores, placing him among the top live percent of those who entered the 2006 competition. com-petition. Brandon received a Letter of in recognition of his outstanding out-standing academic promise. Brandon says he was surprised sur-prised by this. He said, "I did the best I could and it just happened." Next year Brandon plans on attending Brigham Young University for a semester and then serve' an LDS mission. mis-sion. On Saturday, Oct. 15, this year's juniors have the opportunity op-portunity to take the PSATNMSQT and do just what Brandon did. Brandon's Bran-don's advice to them, and any aspiring student, is to "Study hard and do the best you can in everything you do." Good luck to these students, stu-dents, and congratulations Brandon on his outstanding achievement! Red Devil Cross Country goes to state tournament s,-: The drought is over, and we don't mean the lack of rain that has fallen in Springville the last five years. The boys' cross country team at Springville High is going back to State. No one is sure how long it has been since SHS qualified quali-fied a boys' team to State. Records only go back twenty years, and they don't show a team from here during that time. The boys had enjoyed a very successful season thus far, and only needed to place in the top four at the Region VII championships last Saturday Sat-urday to achieve a place in history. With the top three ranked teams in 4A competing compet-ing at Kiwanis Park in Provo, Pro-vo, it would not be a given that they would qualify. Led again by senior captain cap-tain Rex Shields and sopho more Spencer Gardner, the boys easily gained that coveted cov-eted state spot. Shields easily out ran the rest of the field to place first in a very fast time of 15:29 for the three mile course. Gardner battled it out with Lehi's Chris Dorton before be-fore finishing in third place. Phillip Mecham placed thirteenth, thir-teenth, with Jason greeman twenty-fifth and Spencer Foutz thirtieth to round out the varsity scoring. Also going go-ing to state for the boys' team is Bryson Pope, Adam Scheetz and Bryce Barker. Representing Region VII besides SHS will be Provo, Orem and Timpview. Provo and SHS will be the favorites going into what should be a very exciting state meet. State will take place on October Octo-ber 19th at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City.
