A flyer was given to each student inviting them to explore ex-plore the mission statement by Pi 9 I Pi -! i classroom at SHS. "We'd like it to be more than just a statement ...to have meaning," explained Principal Ann Anderson. So, with the "Mission Statement Writing Contest," came an opportunity writing an assigned essay for English class. Incentives were written at the bottom of the flyer: a $300 first prize, $200 second prize, and $100 third prize for each grade. These scholarship funds are intended for the students to start a college col-lege fund or add to an existing one. The following four essay prompts were outlined on the flyer: Why is the Springville High School Mission Statement important im-portant for your community? Think of an experience that has taught you the three parts of the mission statement. Tell us the story. How can each part of the mission statement help you become be-come a better person? Think of a person or people in your life that exemplify the three parts of the mission statement and explain why. Essays were submitted to students' respective English teachers who then used a rubric to choose three essays to move on to the next level. Then, independent judges chose the winning essays which best exemplified the SHS mission statement. The senior first place winner is Melissa Erskine; second place, Natalie White; and third place, Liz Genther. The first place junior is Caleb Kriser; second place, Danielle Dear-den; Dear-den; and third, Telisha Dallin. For sophomores, fist place is. Bethany Burr; second, Melissa Griffin; and third, Bailey Stewart. Stew-art. Many students felt this experience expe-rience truly helped them understand un-derstand the nine word mission mis-sion statement phrase. "We hope this essay contest will become a tradition," commented comment-ed Mrs. Anderson. Springville High School earned "six clears;" this means that SHS is an "accredited" "ac-credited" school and that the accredited status will not be reviewed for another six years. "That's the longest you can go without another visit," commented Secretary Judy Johnson. "This is the third time I've gone through the accreditation process," said Assistant Principal Dr. John Webb, "and this deals a lot more with our school. This is for school improvement. Expecting Ex-pecting to win, the Red Devils Dev-ils played Provo on the Bulldogs' Bull-dogs' home field. After a grueling battle, the Devils came out beaten 2-1. "We should have won that game," said defensive player, play-er, Dan Law. "No comment," said center midfielder, Adam Young. The Devils got over the depression, de-pression, however, by the time Thursday rolled around. Also an away game, the Devils beat the first-ranked first-ranked Timpview T-Birds. Winning 3-1, "The Devils dominated in every aspect of the game," said Lance Stonehocker. "We played very well as a team," said Young. To this day I have no memories of my mother and father living in the same house. A series of emotionally and physically abusive relationships rela-tionships left her only with a broken heart and pile of empty promises. But, as for me and my sister, she never let us know. She sang with us and colored pictures with us, and we never knew that we were living in financial poverty. 1 sew trJl 1 'f ni I f I and the SPRINGVILLE HIGH SCHOOL I p JOURNALISM DEPARTMENT For all 2005 Graduating Seniors i Mary Bevins You have completed something great and are moving on to something marvelous!
