Show Preacher inspires congregation to lose 1000 pounds Could your preacher do more for your heart than just inspire it? One local church leader has done just that, Lynn Payne, a 50 year-old executive from West Valley City was concerned about his health. Tired of not feeling good, he signed up for the American Heart Association course, Simply Fit For Life and changed a few habits. He started eating a regular breakfast, brea-kfast, looking at calories and fat content on labels and started exercising a few times a week. One year later, he was 40 pounds lighter, his blood pressure had dropped by 5 points and his cholesterol had dropped 30 points. "I'm feeling better than I have in 10 years," he said. Buoyed by his own success, he decided to spread the good news. As the leader of his local church, Payne challenged his congregation to adopt a few healthier habits. The congregation responded. One 'thousand pounds lighter, the choir members are smiling bigger, the pews are sagging less and their leader is continuing to lose weight right along with them. Payne attributes much of his success to the Simply Fit For Life program. "The teacher was terrific, and great with people. The class was a nice mix of information informa-tion and practical experiences. experienc-es. It provided good accountability account-ability and was always encouraging en-couraging no matter which way the scale went. Even since the class, I've continued contin-ued to get good results." Much like Payne's congregation, con-gregation, many Utahns are concerned about their health. With so many contradicting weight loss programs and fad diets, where can Utahns turn for a reliable health resource? re-source? To address this need, the American Heart Association, Associa-tion, offers Simply Fit For Life: a ten-week comprehen sive course that teaches sound health principles based on proven scientific research. The course offers practical application of these principles to enable realistic and sustainable sus-tainable behavior change in the areas of exercise, nutrition, nutri-tion, stress management and sleep Simply Fit For Life classes class-es start the second week of January at locations across the state.
