Show Page Six - The Springville Herald - January 8, 2004 Gkaiir ir. DLillian CHURCH NEWS Dear Dr. Lillian: Question: Why do boys and girls turn into men and women? Answer: It's because very life has the power in it to change and grow. But before we talk about human change, let me first tell you a story about tadpoles. Tadpoles start out as eggs that are hatched in mud puddles or ponds where they swim around like little fish. But they are not exactly fish, they are really water larvae with a big head and a fish tail and breathing gills. As the weeks go by, the tadpoles start to grow legs. Now imagine, they are still swimming like fish, but they are growing legs, too, legs that will in the future allow them to walk on land. A few more weeks go by and the tadpole that was first an egg, then a tadpole with a tail and then a tadpole growing legs, now turns into a beautiful frog that can live both in the water and on the land. And that's how it works for boys and girls. First the baby girl or boy can only sleep, then sit, then crawl, then walk, then play in the sandbox, then be mom or dad's helper at home, then go to school and learn to read and write, then become a teenager and try out new ideas, powers and ways to be and then become a man or woman ready to play and work in bigger and bigger worlds. But there is also an important im-portant difference between how this change of form works for tadpoles and how it works for human boys and girls. Even though every human has the power to change and grow, you will do this in your very own way, because it's your life. Yes, there are many humans, but there is only one of you. Along each step of the way, you will have many choices to express this creative cre-ative spark inside of you. You see, inside the human, this creativeerr$$k is the power to choose. The tadpole can only go from the water to the land and be both in water and on land. But the steps I'm going to talk about next, the tadpole tad-pole cannot do. As a human, you can go anywhere your creativity, your free will and your skills take you, both inside of yourself and outside of yourself. So, it's a good idea for you to play as creatively cre-atively as you can and to learn as deeply as you can. Make sure you always allow yourself fully activated creation cre-ation in your play and learning. learn-ing. Your question was very interesting. You are welcome to ask your big sister to e-mail e-mail me again on your behalf, be-half, if you have any more questions. Dear Dr. Lillian: Question: My wife is cranky a lot. I think it's because she's married to Utah Valley The next regular, second-Saturday-of-the-Month meeting meet-ing of the Utah Valley PAF (Personal Ancestral File) Users Group will be on Saturday, Jan. 10, from 9 a.m. until noon in the LDS "Red" Chapel at 4000 N. Timpview Drive (650 East), in Provo. The main presentation presenta-tion will be by Don and Vivian Ostler on Research and Service Opportunities at the Family History Library. The presentation will cover useful things that they learned while serving LDS missions at the Family History Histo-ry Library in Salt Lake. They were released in November 2003 from their Church and Family History missions at the Family History Histo-ry Library where they served in the U.S. Canada Zone helping patrons use various tools to find and record their ancestry. Before retiring Don was an engineer for Hughes Aircraft Company and they have both been very active in family history for many years, including being Directors Direc-tors of a Family History Center, teaching many FH Dr. Lillian me. Answer: Your wife has chosen to be married to you and she has chosen to stay married to you. She has a life with you and also a life of her own with her own specific personal and professional profes-sional purpose. When people are cranky, it is because they are impatient impa-tient and discontented with themselves; as that deep discontent surfaces, they push that painful and uncomfortable uncom-fortable feeling away from themselves so they don't have to examine their own life and motives. In your situation, you are perceiving this pushing away as meaning that your wife is sending the cranky feeling in your direction direc-tion and then you are identifying identi-fying with the idea that you are to blame for her unhappi-ness. unhappi-ness. But you see, each person is responsible for his or her own self-image, for how he or she feels about themselves. them-selves. And no, there is nothing wrong with you as a human being or as a husband. hus-band. You need to be very clear about that. Having clarified that you cannot be responsible for how she feels about herself, are there any areas inside of yours elf where you would like to upgrade yourself and your skills, in your work, recreation, devotion, and relationships? Are there any new self-discoveries you would like to make? Please understand, you are not choosing to grow and explore because you are inadequate or unlovable, but rather because you would like to evolve, just for the joy and creativity of a new approach. Pick one or two areas of the four categories mentioned and make your upgrades wonderful, one solid step at a time. From that new place inside yourself and from that newly created energy, you will feel better about yourself and no longer need to feel guilt about not taking on her responsibility for herseif. No human can do for another. We can only be responsible for ourselves. Dear Reader of any age: You are welcome to e-mail your questions to lzarndtc-ity-for-children-and-teens.org. During the season of colds and snow shoveling, you might want to make your own hot compress. Pierce, then microwave a baking potato for about five minutes; wrap the heated potato in a warm, damp cloth. The potato will retain heat longer than a cloth alone. Be sure the potato is not hot enough to burn, and keep it wrapped. ii . j '&m - - : - - ? Keep snow from blocking vents To ensure the safe and efficient operation of natural gas equipment, Questar Gas reminds homeowners to keep snow from burying exhaust and intake vents, and from piling up on natural gas meters. Natural gas appliances such as furnaces and water heaters vent combustion byproducts to the outside, and many of these appliances also get their combustion air from the outside. Therefore, it's important that intake and exhaust vents are completely unobstructed by ice or snow. Clear vents will keep pilct lights burning and will allow appliances to operate safely and efficiently. The company also advises homeowners to be careful when shoveling snow off driveways, sidewalks or ' roofs to avoid burying and possibly damaging natural gas meters. Piling snow onto the meter . can damage it andor cover the regulator vent, causing the meter to malfunction. Significant accumulation of snow on the meter should be carefully cleared away to ensure proper prop-er operation. Also, customers should not shelter the meter with a metal sheet or wheelbarrow. When these or other metal objects, including trash cans, bicycles andor gardening tools, come in contact with the meter, it interferes with the system that protects the meter and associated piping from corrosion. Keeping meters free from snow and other obstacles also make it easier for meter readers to see the dials and get accurate reads.
