Robert Stevenson Blessed is the man who, having nothing to say, abstains ab-stains from giving in words evidence of the fact. George Eliot The United States chose the bald eagle as its national bird in 1782. City Council Continued from page 1 ring in the compound;" This is an ongoing problem prob-lem and the council has taken the matter under advisement. The Council announced that Art City Days 2003 will be held June 7 through June I4- , ". Councilman Balzotti also talked about the problem of dogs in the Spring ' Acres Arts Park during performances. performanc-es. He noted last year that a person wanted to bring in two Dobermans with them to a performance and they were refused admission. ' He said the person indicated indi-cated that the dogs would not hurt anyone. However, Bal-sotti Bal-sotti said he would not feel good sitting by the dogs regardless of what the owner said. City Attorney Fitzgerald agreed to look into changing the city ordinances. Other problems of dog "do do" were also mentioned in the discussion. Fitzgerald also said that four of the ash trees on the city park have been determined deter-mined to be diseased and that two of. them pose a threat of falling over. Remembering the strong winds last summer in which a large tree fell over damaging damag-ing a truck and taking out another tree, it was determined deter-mined to take out the two trees this spring. The other two trees will have to come out, but have been determined safe for the time being by the city arbor-ist, arbor-ist, Mike Bartholomew. The city has applied for a Community Development Block Grant from Mountain-lands Mountain-lands to build a sidewalk from 400 North Street to 300 North Street on the east side of 400 West Street to facilitate facili-tate children walking to school at the new Westside School on west Center Street. The sidewalk would also include a footbridge over Hobble Creek next to the street bridge. City administrator Lane Long said that the city should know this week if the CDBG grant has been approved by Mountainlands . : This is the first time in j several years that the city lias j applied for a CDBG grant. The grants are issued on need and who will benefit most from the grants. All cities in the county except Provo and Orem compete for the money available avail-able for the grants. Because of their size, Provo and Orem fall under different guidelines for CDBG grant money. The council also approved entering into an agreement with the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources which will allow the completion of 700 North Street from Main Street to 400 East Street. This street involved some wetlands and made the contract con-tract with DWR necessary to complete the street. Negotiations Negotia-tions have been ongoing for several years. rrr Springville Middle School seventh grader Kyle Tuft was honored recently for receiving the highest score in the school's American Mathematics Competition. For instance, with a young family you may need upstairs or basement bedrooms with their accompanying accom-panying stairs-no problem when you are young and your legs are working well. Also, when our eyes were younger, we didn't need our home lighting to be as bright as we need it now that our eyes are dimmer. We are not as agile and getting out of a tub, and climbing stairs that don't have handrails is more trying for us. We know we are not going to improve our bodies and regain our former abilities, so what can we do? ' The best , potential may very well be to improve and change our home to make it safer and more functional for our physical conditions. An example of this type of change may be installing lever handles on doors, using reaching devices and jar openers, etc., if arthritis makes these tasks hard to do. Can't see as well? How about using brighter light globes. Can't get out of the tub? Have some grab bars installed, and while you are at it have hand rails installed on all your stairways. Falling is the leading in-home in-home accident and some simple preventions can help insure that it won't happen to you. Either remove or securely se-curely fasten scatter rugs and doormats. Look at your furniture layout. Are low footstools or end tables in places that would turn them into trip hazards? Do you have adequate lighting in dark areas? Check your thresholds. If they are set too high they can be adjusted lower. You might consider replacing some of your stairways with ramps if it is feasible. With your family gone you may not need as much living space as you formerly did. You can possibly save on heating bills and make your living space more comfortable com-fortable by closing off some Are you Now is a great didn't do last year!! o Kitchens o Bath rooms o Room Additions o interior Refinishing Llewellyn Construction Doug Llewellyn - Owner 376-3072 grade Middle term. If all this sounds like too much effort, you might want to explore other housing options or services in your community. If your current living situation does not meet your needs contact your Office on Aging, listed in the local government pages of your telephone directory.
