The calendar was rated one of the top six calendars for kids because it encourages creativity and learning. Locally published calendar lor kids Who would have thought that a small-town idea would become a big-time deal? The Learning Calendar, a history-based history-based activity calendar created creat-ed by Claudia Black of Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove and Laurie Whiting Whit-ing of Mapleton, recently received top honors as a valuable and unique learning tool for kids. Beverly Hernandez of www.about.com gave The Learning Calendar five stars and rated it number one on the site's "Top 6 Calendars for Kids Guide Picks." Top picks were selected because they "encourage creativity and learning" and "bring enjoyment all year round." Hernandez believes that calendars "can be more than just about what day it is." She praised The Learning Calendar as "a simple way to... add excitement to your day" and noted that "Kids will love discovering a new adventure every day." Hernandez said, "I think it's great for children. If they stop and red it, the information informa-tion is very interesting and they can learn a lot. For example, 1 have a 16-year-old son, and many times he'll come and tell me about the little piece of trivia he learned from the calendar that day. It's nice, easy way to get kids interested in I lOBBI Ji WKST CRKKK STAKE 500 S.650 F.asi, Springville FIRST WARD Sacrament Meeting 9:30 Sunday School, Primary 10:50 YW, RS, PM 11:40 Bishop Can Hyllon 489-3947 SF.COND WARD Sacrament Meeting 1:30 Sunday School, Primary 2:50 YW, RS, PM 3:40 Bishop Michael Hicks 489-8430 THIRD WARD Sacrament Meeting 2:50 Sunday School, Primary 2:00 YW, RS, I'M 1:00 Bishop Qumn Daliin 489-5938 (Above wards meet at Stake Center 500 S. 650 F.ast) FOURTH WARD Sacrament Meeting 11:00 Sunday School, Primary 12:20 YW, RS, PM 1:10 Bishop Jay Boyer 489-3459 F11T1I WARD Sacrament Meeting 9:00 Sunday School, Primary 10:20 YW, RS, PM 11:10 Bishop Nathan Ijrwis 489-8536 SIXTH WARD Sacrament Meeting 1:00 Sunday School, Primary 2:20 YW, RS, PM 3:10 Bishop Tracy Ijwis 489-2935 Above wards meet at 1440 E. 900So. " Interest in learning is a key idea behind the calendar, which Black originally developed devel-oped for her own children while living in Springville. She started making a monthly homemade calendar that listed an historical event for each day of the year and included a trivia question related to the event, or an activity for the day. Claudia said, "The concept con-cept behind the whole thing was to make learning fun, so on each day I'd add something some-thing to make the historical event significant for that day, like eating ice cream cones on the day the ice cream cone was invented." Two years ago, Black's daughter, Laurie Whiting, proposed that they share the fun. So they teamed up to publish a full-color printed version. The inaugural 2003 edition was released last fall and is still available in some bookstores. The brief asks the Massachusetts Supreme Su-preme Court to reject a lawsuit that would allow same-sex marriages and potentially force other states to legally recognize those unions. Seven couples filed the suit after they were denied licenses for same-sex marriages mar-riages in Massachusetts. On May 7, 2002, Suffolk Superior Superi-or Court Judge Thomas Connolly rejected the couples' coup-les' claims to have a constitutional constitu-tional right to a gay marriage. mar-riage. "This isn't just abut how Massachusetts treats marriage, mar-riage, it is also about how Massachusetts treats other states," says Shurtleff. "Massachusetts' "Mas-sachusetts' actions could undermine or supplant the marriage laws in other states and lead to a bitter constitutional constitu-tional confrontation." During the past seven years, two-thirds of all states have enacted legislation forbidding same-sex marriages marriag-es and denying recognition of those marriages from other states. Congress passed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 to prevent the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages. Traditionally, states have declined to recognize marriages mar-riages valid in other states if they violate a strong public policy. Teenage marriages, common law marriages, uncle-niece marriages and first-cousin marriages can be valid in the states where they are performed but denied recognition in other states. Shurtleff adds, "Legalization of same-sex marriage would constitute a radical change in the very concept of marriage. mar-riage. " Despite the historical precedence, the brief argues that the lawsuit is an effort by same-sex marriage advocates advo-cates to change the law' in .one state to force all other states to recognize gay marriages. mar-riages. "If you're married, you're married; this is one country, and you don't get a marriage visa when you cross a state border." The brief notes that after Vermont legalized same-sex civil unions, only 22 of the couples registering civil unions in Vermont were from Vermont. In 2002, about 11 of the couples taking part in civil unions were from Vermont--the other 89 came from other states. The Utah Attorney General's Office predicts the same type of results if Massachusetts allows same-sex marriages. "The legislature, not the courts, should determine the requirements that two people must meet in order to be married, says the brief. "Any law that declares public policy must be followed by the court, even if the court disagrees with the policy. Utah Assistant Attorney General Brent Burnett filed the brief on behalf of Utah, Nebraska and South Dakota. Health notes While some people can chug coffee or pop and have no trouble sleeping at night, others are much more sensitive sensi-tive to caffeine. For those people, even small amounts of the substance may led to an elevated heart rate, nausea, nau-sea, restlessness and difficulty sleeping. If you'd like to cut back on your caffeine intake, be sure to check the labels at the supermarket. You may find caffeine where you least expected it, in certain pain medications, for instance. Coffee-flavored ice cream contains caffeine, as does chocolate. And, yes, you'll even find small amounts in decaffeinated coffee. A breach of the biosecurity biosecu-rity can be financially devastating devas-tating to business and a threat to the food supply. Recent disease outbreaks in the poultry industry have brought attention to this issue. According to Utah State University Extension poultry specialist David Frame, the recent outbreak of Exotic Newcastle Disease is a good example of how quickly a disease can affect an entire industry. Since the outbreak in California Oct. 1, the Utah Department of Agriculture Agricul-ture has placed a ban on poultry and pet birds that may be passing through the infected areas. This includes eggs, game birds, hatching eggs and pet birds such as parrots, cockatiels and lovebirds love-birds from the infected areas of southern California and Nevada. The Utah Fancy Poultry Association has also canceled its spring show because of biosecurity issues and severe importation embargoes that have been implemented. This points to the need for better daily practice of sanitation, Frame said. Biosecurity Bio-security is an ongoing effort. It is mainly a matter of following fol-lowing general sanitary principles. He suggests these measures for risk reduction: - Learn how diseases are spread and propagated. - Don't visit neighbor's flocks and hatcheries unless absolutely necessary. - Consider all poultry as potential disease carriers. Keep birds in a comfortable environment.
