This picture shows Fucan Sorenson standing on the road east of the Springville Evergreen Cemetery just before he left to go to the mission home in Salt Lake Jan. 24, 1949. Mendenhall said that it started snowing snow-ing between Thanksgiving and Dec. 1, 1948 and snowed continuously for almost two weeks! It was so deep that is was impossible for snow equipment to keep the roads cleaned off. o hp (jL rrk . The snow was so deep that it packed down to a depth of eight to ten inches and then turned into ice and created a hazard especially as chuck holes developed in it. It was .very hard to drive around according to Bruce Mendenhall of Mapleton, and the state was not using salt at that time. It started to thaw about Feb. 1. Mendenhall said that even though we have had lots of snow this winter, it is nothing compared to the infamous winter of 1948-19. When officers entered the building in the middle of the night, the discovered the huge amount of marijuana plants growing grow-ing and evidence the marijuana was being packaged for sale. The plants ranged in size from sprouts to several feet tall. Lt. Stan Eggen, spokesman for the task force, said that while drug-related arrests are not uncommon un-common in Springville, this was one of the biggest he had seen in years. "It would be impossible to determine how many crops the plants would produce a year, but if all 500 did, it would be worth $500,000 on the street," Eggen said. John W. Johnson, 53, 923 Artistic Circle, Springville, was arrested at his home. Johnson allegedly owned the storage shed where the marijuana plants were found.
