Show Page Two - The Springville Herald EDITORIAL What about UTA? Last week the Spanish Fork City Council voted to put Utah Transit authority on the November ballot. Their decision came about alter UTA decided to decrease their service in south Utah County starting Aug. 20. Spanish Fork feels that they can use the S560.000 they give yearly to UTA for something clse-to improve roads or to cut taxes. That money comes from a quarter of a cent sales tax their citizens pay. Lvery community, including Springville, belongs to UTA by a cit) wide election authorizing a quarter of a cent sales tax. Other cities in the county, including Springville, are going to talk about the problem of less service for the same money. What is the solution? There are many people in Springville and Maplelon who ride the bus-who depend on that service to get to work or other destinations. Others ride the bus to Salt Lake and then take TRAX to their point of interest. It really does "save the fuss" when they ride the bus in this instance what with all of the freeway construction. But we hear many complaints of the busses never having many rulers on them. Perhaps one solution would be to send smaller busses to the outlying areas of the county. As we understand it, the bus service to Springville and on to Payson alter Aug. 20 would be down Main Street only. Maybe that is enough. Those riding the bus would have to make their way to Main Street. What we question is whether any city should pay the same amount to UTA for less service? M apleion at update cancer incidents by Anne Woelkers Citizens do take action in Mapleton. Last December Marilyn Mari-lyn Peterson asked the Mapleton City Council to check into a more recent and in-depth cancer study update. Unfortunately it was the Mayor looking into it and he was not in attendance at this meeting. Peterson also offered of-fered to volunteer. Peterson also asked what the city was doing about mote affordable af-fordable housing in Mapleton. In the past the council has expressed tiie opinion that while there may be ways to make housing more affordable for citizens it really isn't affordable in the terms of the use of public facilities. The Planning Commission continued their hearing in the effort to study the situation and has taken no action thus far. The city council coun-cil will await a recommendation from the Planning Commission. In further action prompted by the citizens, the city has scheduled sched-uled a work meeting to examine all the fees that the city charges. Ixo Thomscn went before the council at the last meeting asking if something could be done. At this meeting he followed up on the subject. The action by the council will make any adjustments adjust-ments ncccssaiy. Health note Kids may suffer a double negative effect if they drink caffeinated soft drinks instead of milk. Milk contains the calcium necessary for strong bones, but caffeine reduces calcium in the body. By the time they become teenagers, the kids may have poor bone density and their bones could be as weak as an elderly person's. Dairy products are the best food sources of calcium because they also contain vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium. COMMENT of h parties have Editor: As a visitor to Springville recently, I would like to make some comments to the editor by Art Larson in the July 1 2th issue of the Springville Herald. I agree completely with Mr. Larson Lar-son concerning same sex marriages marriag-es though 1 thoroughly take him to task concerning who is God's political party. Larson specifically labeled the Republican Party as God's party and the Democratic Party as "the Party of moral perversion and carnal values." He mentions a quote recently by Elder Russell Kids in line arts need support Editor: Where is the community support? Most parents in the community would never think to miss their first grader's first musical program, but as the child grows older things change. Kids who go into sports will be supported sup-ported by the whole community. Children who go into the arts won't be supported as well. Here are a few of my observations: obser-vations: Performances at elementary elemen-tary schools are attended by parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters. At the middle school performances you might lose the brothers and sisters, but most of the parents and grandparents are there. When the child teaches Jr. High, a division begins. Sports become the thing to watch and Editor: While celebrating July 24th, remember history can inform us, if we let it. When the Mormons left Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1846 and were encamped at Winter Quarters, Quar-ters, Brigham Young sent Jessie .Little to Washington to secure any facilities the Government might offer to aid the Mormons in their westward migration. Col. Thomas Kane, moved by the poverty and distress of the Mormon Mor-mon people, arranged audience with key men and President Polk, who were also sympathetic. Due to the War with Mexico, although there was an overflow of volunteers to fight the war, Pres. Polk arranged to enlist 500 Mormon volunteers, as an act of help and kindness. That Government Govern-ment money, paid in advance, We must change complacent society Editor: So often we find the moral and virtuous design of our future posterity expected to be "O.K." Yet. we enter into varying establishments estab-lishments found in our surrounding surround-ing communities and find an increasing amount of tolerance toward media promoting immorality immo-rality that infringes on the rights of youth to be raised in a morally chaste society. How unfortunate it is that in the United States we have laws that are not being enforced, laws that were established to give society the power to grow intellectually, intel-lectually, economically, agriculturally agricul-turally and morally: to give our children the right to be raised without the tainting images of immorality laced by pornogra Urge Congress to support HR1146 Editor: KBYU's "In Favor of The Family" program pointed out that Americans mustn't ignore the United Nations. The single organization orga-nization that never "ignored the United Nations" is The John Birch Society (JBS). Decades before most family advocates realized that the UN could be dangerous to the family, to individuals indi-viduals or to American independence. indepen-dence. The John Birch Society was fervently issuing these warnings; warn-ings; warnings which went largely large-ly unheard and unheeded. Extensive smear campaigns against The JSB were conducted in the 1960s, originating with an article in the "People's World," a Communist Conspiracy targeted The John Birch Society for destruction. de-struction. Why? They feared the Society's principled educational opposition to their plot for a new Ballard, "Lucifer is waging a vicicis war for the souls of mankind." man-kind." I sincerely doubt that Elder Ballard was waging a war on the Democratic Party. One year ago a General Authority Au-thority of the LDS Church spoke at the Vancouver, Washington Stake Conference which I attended. attend-ed. He said that anyone who had any business dealings with the tobacco industry is working directly with and for the devil. The vast majority of money contributed by the tobacco industry indus-try is to the Republican Party and its member in Congress. The fine arts concerts are sparsely attended. High school is when the division becomes even greater. Often parents might not attend their child's fine arts performance. perfor-mance. Why is this? Springville High School's fine arts program has very high quality quali-ty performances. Their choirs, orchestras and bands have been highly acclaimed in other parts of the state and beyond. They are asked to return year after year. Parents and other community members support fund-raisers for the arts really well. Why don't they support the performances? What are the reasons that our community does not come to these top-notch performances? The excuse cannot be given that the concerts aren't publicized. Springville's own paper advertis made the migration to the Rocky Mountains possible. When the Mormon Battalion arrived at Tucson, AZ, the war had ended. The Mormons arrived in the Great Salt Lake Valley July 24, 1847. My grandparents built wagons in Council Bluffs from 1846 to 1850, to get the Mormons here, using that Government Gov-ernment aid. before they left for the Utah Territory. While we celebrate, all the ways that we have grown and flourished, it might do us good to remember we are not an island unto ourselves. None of us live in a vacuum alone. Everything we do effects life around us in multiple ways. We should think of inclusion rather than exclu sion. When we insist everything phy. Some of these laws concerning this topic draw the line concerning concern-ing right and wrong, a line that is filled with a vast ravine of leeway, lee-way, and yet it is still being stepped over like the writer of some romance novel steps over the line of fidelity into fornication and adultery. For example, pornographic material has been found in our grocery store magazines such as "Maxim", "Mind and Muscle Power", "Bazaar", "Lowrider" and many others. These magazines maga-zines contain material that is against the law. One form of deviance that has become a norm of society is the practice of fornication and adultery. adul-tery. Yes, these two subjects are world order. Few outside the Society bucked "popular wisdom" and opposed the UN. For decades The JBS alone warned of conspirators working to implement a design for global government through empowerment empower-ment of the United Nations. The John Birch Society, almost alone, saw through the UN's propaganda, propagan-da, remembering it's globalist and communist founders. Now, as some non-Birchers finally see the danger global government by consensus poses to our constitutional Republic, some wrongly believe the . UN can't be opposed, but instead must be accepted, legitimizing the global government and finally collaborating with it. The Society offers a real solution: "Get US out of the UN." Birchers don't ignore the UN. we urge congress to finally PAGr E problems Republican Party, time and time again, has supported pro-tobacco measures. My intent is not to demonize the Republican Party any more than the Democratic Party. Each has its sacred cows which I am sure God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ certainly do not support. I submit that anyone who considers any political politi-cal party as God's party needs to repent. Stephen M. Do parents not go to these performance because their teenager teen-ager can drive to the performance location by themselves? This is not a good excuse. Is it because of the cost? Sports events at Springville High School cost $4 to $6. Most fine arts events are free of charge. There is no excuse ex-cuse for not attending these concerts. con-certs. With this new school year coming up, our community needs to support our teens in fine arts and show them that we really are the Art City. Candri Ann Barton Springville must be reduced to simpler terms, we create our own tunnel vision, in effect "we cut off our nose to spite our face. " We insist we are right and others are wrong and send missionaries out by the thousands to get the whole world to think, to talk and to act in our "simple-minded" ways when we are blessed by our exposure to their cultures and their languages. Whatever we can do to grow and expand our lives and our thinking will help us mature. MATURITY, that wonder term that allows us to be gracious and loving and capable of living in harmony with neighbors and friends alike. Millie Price Schulz Springville against the law in all fifty states, and still the eyes of those who know let these practices continue like water racing down the drain of yesteryear's plan for improvement. improve-ment. With more laws having been made since the day that these were set forth, we just see how accepted these practices have become, laws that implicate the right to live in a lifestyle that leads fornication by the hand, and calls itself "the rights of consenting consent-ing adults." How long will we let the hopes and dreams of America be washed away by the mire of crime accepted by complacent society? Brock L. Roberts recognize the UN as an enemy, to cease funding; to cease engaging engag-ing in UN wars (peacekeeping). Agreed, "don't ignore the UN," but don't legitimize it either; instead abolish it!
