Show Volunteers needed to help youth Volunteers of all ages are needed to serve as mentors to Utah County youth. There are many organizations that need volunteer mentors to assist with the programs they run. Three such programs are Project Vision, Vi-sion, Slate Canyon Youth Center and the Provo School District Mentoring Program. In order to participate in Project Vision, youth must complete an application applica-tion and be approved before a mentor is assigned. "The goal of Project Vision is to prevent substance abuse, crime, gang involvement and poverty," said Justin White, Project Vision coordinator. Study for GEO on TV The Utah State Office of Education is now enrolling students stu-dents for the August GED on TV program. The program allows individuals without a high school diploma to earn an equivalency certificate by studying at home. GED on TV will be broadcast on KULC-TV Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings from 5:30 to 6 p.m. beginning August 23. Classes start soon and enrollment enroll-ment is free. Jarvis, a 1998 graduate of Springville Sprin-gville High School, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training train-ing at Recruit Training Command, Com-mand, Great Lakes, Illinois. During the eight-week program, pro-gram, Jarvis completed a variety of training which included classroom class-room study and practical instruction instruc-tion on naval customs, first aid, fire fighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. Am emphasis is -also placed on physical fitness. Quilt raffle Just a little update on the effort to raise money for the Thermal Imaging Cameras for the Fire Departments in Springville and Mapleton. They are getting closer to getting this life-saving equipment in our community. To date, they need approximately $5,000 more. They invite everyone out to the July 24 celebration at Maple-ton Maple-ton Park. The Mapleton's Women's Wo-men's Auxiliary will hold a quilt raffle with the proceeds going towards the cameras.
