Though given identical instructions regarding format and process, eleven BYU students achieved eleven unique responses to a still life of either cups or shoes. This straight forward academic exercise has been used for centuries throughout through-out the world. Starting with 44 X 40 inch gessoed panels, the students first completed the painting using only burnt umber and white. This process called grisaille, was traditionally used to establish the entire painting before adding colors which were very costly. Historically, many oil paint colors col-ors were made from expensive precious materials the artists wanted to use sparingly. Today paints of any color are comparable compara-ble in price, but the grisaille SPRING CREEK STAKE 355 N. 400 East, Springville SIXTH WARD Sacrament Meeting 9:00 Sunday School, Primary 10:20 YW, RS.PM 11:10 Bishop Craig Huff 489-3412 860 E.. 200 North, Springville SEVENTH WARD Sacrament Meeting 1 1:00 Sunday School, Primary 12:20 YM, RS.PM.... 1:10 Bishop Randall L. Because they were able to establish value before concerning themselves with issues of color. The next step was to add temperature to the burnt sienna, this pushed each work into a new arena. The paintings began to adopt even more personality. Finally, through glazing application applica-tion of opaque color the paintings really took off in new directions, and expressed different artistic objectives and tendencies. The viewer can enjoy tracing the paintings through each step of the process and comparing how and when one deviates from another in each individuals personal style. Overall "Cups and Shoes" maintains consistency and it the same sparking diversity. The exhibit will open with a reception oh Wednesday July 21, 1999 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and will close on August 20, 1999.
