Show It's Our District IB) Parents by Charla Zeeman One of the programs offered by Nebo School District is the Young Parents School under the direction of Barbara Quacken-bush. Quacken-bush. This year 52 young women are in the program and eighteen will graduate. One. evening a week a special computer class is' offered for extra credit to those who are the principal caregivers to their children. One young man is attending this class, but young men's needs are actually better met under the other programs. Graduation requirements are set by the student's regular high school.; When they have met these requirements, the girls return to their high schools and graduate with their peers. The school also serves some adults who graduate with Landmark High School if they desire a graduation ceremony. This program pro-gram differs from the GED certificate cer-tificate which is an equivalency test. The school offers all the core courses required by the state education department. Classes are offered on what is called an A B schedule. Eight classes are offered of-fered a week with four offered every other school day. (Four one day and the other four the next day.) All teachers are accredited. ac-credited. An on-site Day Care Center is maintained with one full-time and two part-time supervisors. This allows a supervisor to be in the nursery and the toddler area at all times. Parents are required to help in the center at least once every other day, but preferably every day, for one period. This gives the girls a chance to learn about their own child, to learn child care skills and to see the interaction between all the children. chil-dren. They care for not only their own child, but also have the opportunity to care for someone else's children. In addition to the required classes, a variety of electives are offered such as classes in foods and nutrition, art, child development, develop-ment, adult roles, sewing and interior design. The needs of the students are met through concurrent concur-rent enrollment, internships, GED Preparation, UVSC ATE courses and full-time enrollment. Support services are provided, not only by the district, hut by the community. Services such as health care, job training and placement and financial help are available. Some help is offered through the Mountainland Applied Ap-plied Technology Consorium. ,' When they have graduated, some young women go to college, col-lege, technical schools or directly into the job market. One of the joys of conducting this school, is hearing from former students and hearing about the positive influence influ-ence the school has had on their, lives. Teachers also see a positive influence generated between the girls as encouragement, support V 11 V SKI Ill F m inn l nam I ii M Stewart May, age 17, son of Kyrt and Grace Anne Nay of Mapleton, received his Eagle Scout Award at a court of held March 16 in Mapleton. Answer by: Georgia Lauritzen, Utah State University Extension Nutrition Specialist.
