Speech Festival Art Guild winners That the Folk Fest will held on July 10-17 this year? be by Betsy Baird In a reception held at the Provo Towne Centre, the Utah Valley Artist's Guild announced the winners of their Spring Exhibit. Ex-hibit. Over 100 paintings exhibited exhibit-ed by 35 artists were judged by artists Lynn Millman Weidinger of Santiquin and Kimball Warren of Mapleton. Twenty winners Public by Melissa Bradford The Drama Department students stu-dents in 'the Springville Junior High, Students On Stage (S.O.-S.), (S.O.-S.), had a speech festival at the school on February 18. The S.O.S. students had their hands in every part of the speech meet process, thanks to Mrs. Robinson. Robin-son. The students did everything from giving speeches, to tallying scores, to being runners who ushered other participants into their competition areas. The participants all worked extremely had preparing. We gathered quotes, newspaper clippings, statistics and watched news programs for current events information. This was a great experience because it made us look at the world around us and become intently aware of news events, unlike most teenagers. Students had to choose which type of speech they wanted to participate in. Categories included includ-ed oratory, improvisation and extemporaneous speaking. Each contestant had to give their speech three times to separate judges which was nerve racking for most S.O.S. students. In the oratory category, which I competed in, we did a lot of research for our personal topic from books to newspapers to searching the Internet. The topics involved current issues such as,-the as,-the effects the media has on children, to religion being taken out of schools, to drunk driving, abortion and eating disorders. After collecting the materials, we wrote our own original speech and then memorized the eight minute speech. This took a lot of hard work, yet it was fun and educational at the same time. In the improvisation category, students were each given separate topics such as, "Even after the song has ended, the melody lingers on" or "Bloom where you . are planted". After being given the topic, participants, had one and a half min. to prepare and two and a half min. to speak. The speeches used three stories, quotes, etc to compare and contrast con-trast them to the topic. Students were given a new topic by each of the three judges. This was a noble way for students to use their own intelligence. In the extemporaneous category, catego-ry, the participants, also had a time limit of 4 min. to prepare and speak. Topics were based on political themes, for example, one topic was, "Red, White and Blue." These students had to tie the topic in with examples for the past, present and future. This was a challenging task. As with improvisation, im-provisation, speakers were given three different topics during the meet. At the conclusion of the meet, students were given certificates based on their rating scores. The ratings were good, excellent and superior. The first place winners included includ-ed Brittney Richie, Improvisa-. 3r I Melody Boyer, daughter of Seth and Angie Boyer of Scipio, Utah, and a student at Millard High School, has been named a United States Achievement Academy National Award Winner Win-ner in leadership and service. I and my fellow students would like to thank Mrs. Robinson, Robin-son, the Junior High, the judges and most of all the students for making this magnificent learning experience.
