Springville got on the board first when Pat Bird led off the ; second with a double and scored on two consecutive Spanish Fork errors. The Dons scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead, but the Devils came right back in the third when Hamilton tripled and Kerry Oman scored him with a ground-out to short stop. Don pitching then walked the bases full and Todd ; Frischknecht delivered a clutch two RBI singles to put Springville Spring-ville ahead for good. Springville man by Roger Sturrnan Jeff Peterson, a local resident, resi-dent, won the Street Slock Main Event at Suntana Raceway Race-way Saturday evening. Although Peterson was a "late bloomer" in last year's races, he started off with a bang this year. In the first race of the year, Jeff finished second in the Stock Car Heat Race and then in only the second week, won the big one! Drivers come from all over the State of Utah and even from Idaho, Wyoming Wyom-ing and Colorado to compete in the events. This - week at Suntana, trophies were awarded to Pro--stock driver Randy Hardman, limited-stock driver Roy Powell, Pow-ell, Guy Remeck in strcet--stock and Steve George in a first time appearance of the "Cart" class. The heat races were won by Randy Hardman and Fast Freddy Olscn. In the Main Events, Robert Borg led the pack of tiny Cart racers. Jeff Petersen came out on top in Street-slock, Guy Remick took the Limited-stock race and Jim Eaton was number one in Pro-Slock. Utah's unpredictable unpre-dictable spring weather made racing rather "iffy" and sent many racing fans racing for cover just before the main event. The rain didn't last long. Many local residents arc-unaware arc-unaware of the activities that take place each Saturday night just south of town. The win, coupled with a Spanish Fork loss to Cedar City, gives Springville the undisputed championship. Paul Creer also had three hits, Ryan Hamilton drew four walks and scored three runs, and Pat Bird hit a double and a triple. The Devils now advance to inter-region playoffs with a game at home against a Region 7 team. Date and time to be announced. It is not well known outside of racing rac-ing circles that Suntana is the largest and fastest track in the state of Utah. Only Bonneville and Suntana race tracks are paved. There arc some other dirt tracks that operate occasionally oc-casionally in Utah. A record crowd lor the local sport is about 5,000 people who could watch several categories cate-gories of race cars which arc: The "Carts", or "Go-Carts" a very small vehicle that buzzes around the track at incredible speed. The "TQ's" or three quarter midgets that are powered by snow-machine or motorcycle engines and can take a curve in excess of 70 rnpli. The Street Stock is the most popular car and is basically basi-cally just like the car you drive except that it is usually an older model and is fitted with a "roll bar" for the driver's safety. saf-ety. Limited Stock class is a souped up street stock car that has some limited improvements. improve-ments. They are often operated by drivers who have "graduated" from the Street Stock class. Pro-Stock is a car much like you are used to watching on TV. These cars could cost as much as $30,000 to build and are very showy and fast. They are most always driven by experienced veterans of the oval track. On any given Saturday night at Suntana you may Sec some or all of these categories of cars. SEJS Girls Tracti Team fakes Last Friday al , the Spanish Fork track the Springville Red Devil Girls' Track Team came through with a resounding victory vic-tory to claim the Region 8 Championship. Five other schools fell before the onslaught on-slaught as the Red Devils scored points in every event but one. With Heather Witney being sick and not running up to par, Kristcn Shaw picked up the slack and won the 800, 1600, 3200 and anchored the winning 4x400 relay. Witney took 2nd in the 800, 1600, 3rd in the 3200 and 4th in the 400. LynetteChristensen took 4lh in the 1600 and anchored the medley relay to a 3rd place, finish. Julie Kirby, who has spent most of the track season playing with the softball team, showed what a great athlete she is by taking 3rd in the long jump, 2nd in the 100 hurdles, and 300 hurdles and winning Girls by Jessica Black Last week the Lady Red Devils Softball Team played Spanish Fork and Dixie. The girls ended the season with a Red Devil Soccer Teem takes region Springville defeated Carbon 8-0 in its final region 78 soccer soc-cer match Friday. Pool news Lesson sign ups for summer lessons will be Saturday, May 19, from 8 to 10 a.m. for residents resi-dents of Springville and at 10 to 12 a.m. for non-residents. At this time you can sign up for any of the four summer sessions. After that day, there will be certain days set aside for lesson sign ups. First session will run June 4-15; second session, June 18-29; 18-29; third session, July 9-13; fourth and final session, July 30-Aug. 10. Costs for lessons will be group up to 8 students, $25; semi-private, 2 students, $35 per student; and private, $50 per student. There will also be diving sign ups at that time. Summer hours will start June 4. At that time the adult lap and leisure hours will be 5:30 to 7:45 a.m. and 12 to 1 p.m. Open swim will be 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 98 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Party hours will be 5 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Satur-day. At that time, you can reserve the pool for a special cost and have the pool all to yourself. Nicole Argyle was 2nd in the 3200 while the medley relay re-lay team of Lynette Chrislen-scn, Chrislen-scn, Sherrie Morgan, Becky Udy, Amy Mangum was 3rd. Tuesday the Devils hosted Spanish Fork in their last home game this season. The Dons quickly fell to the mighty Devils, and by the end of the second inning, Springville was up 10-0. When the third inning rolled around, the Dons had it with all the abuse, and caught the Devils sleeping and rallied for a quick 8 pts. The Lady Devils in their next at bat went to work and quickly regained their 10 pt. lead to leave the finascore at 18-8. Tara Houtz hit a double and triple, along with triples by Michelle Kirby and Mary Ellen Stover. Thursday the Devils traveled to Dixie to deliver the flyers a "crash landing". The top of llhe first ining lasted over 35 minutes as Springville rolled throthrough their batting order twice. Michelle Kirby hit a 3 run homer in the 18 pt. inning. Mary Ellen Stover and Julie Kirby each hit doubles in the The Lady Red Devils have done it again. The Girls' Softball Team captured the Region 8 title last week to make it a clean sweep of Region 8 in all the womens' sports this year! Lawn Sale and auction Donations are needed for a giant Lawn Sale and Auction that is being sponsored by the Mapleton City Youth Council. The proceeds will go towards projects to improve Mapleton, including the planned expansion of the city building complex. The youth need the help of all Mapleton citizens and ask them to please do their spring cleaning and donate all "throw aways" to the Lawn Sale and Auction. Items should be brought to the drop-off center located at the Mapleton Memorial Mem-orial Building (northeast corner of the city park). Members of the Youth Council will be there to receive the items Saturday Sat-urday morning after 9 a.m. A pickup service will begin Wednesday, Wed-nesday, May 16 starting at 5 p.m. Please place articles in front of houses at roadsides. All items of conceivable worth will be welcome. The smaller, less valuable items will be sold at the Lawn Sale. The larger items (even new items you might like to contribute) will be auctioned off. The Lawn Sale and Auction will be held at the City Park on Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The auction will begin at 2 p.m. that same day. Please get behind this worthwhile project 100. The Youth Council would like to have the biggest and best lawn sale and auction ever, BUT, they cannot do it without citizen citi-zen help. The proceeds from the sale will go to worthwhile projects which will benefit all of Mapleton and its citizens. Thanks!! Region 8 championship Missy Mangum and Cynthia Child capped off a great team victory by winning the final event of the meet. Coaches Doug Bills, Tom Kohler, Mclanie Barker and Jim Young were elated with the victory and are looking forward to the state meet which will be held Friday and Saturday at BYU. While the girls' team has been getting most of the attention atten-tion during the year, the boys' team has been quietly getting better and better as evidenced by their 5th place showing at the region meet and only 12 point out of 4lh place. Steve Sorcnson led the way by winning the high jump and tieing for 5th in the pole vault with Scott Whiting. Todd Jackson wound up 4th in the shot put and look second in the discus. Sam Lee took a 6lh place in the high jump and was on the 2nd place 4x100 top of the second to help the devils get 7 more runs. In the bottom of the inning, Springville Spring-ville became a little lazy and allowed Dixie 7 runs. The third inning found the Devils scoreless score-less while the Flyers brought in one run. The runs by the Dixie Flyers only spared them total destruction by the Devils in a 25-8 loss. The Junior Varsity Team also had wins over Spanish Fork and Dixie. Kelly Jensen struck out 10 Dons to lead ihc Devils to a 9-5 win. Kelly Jensen Jen-sen and Brandie Poulsen both hit home runs. Dixie was defeated by the Devils 17-6. The JV team ended the season with a 5-5 record. In order to advance to the State 3-A Softball Tournament on the 23, 24 and 25 at the Cottonwood Complex in Salt Lake, the Lady Devils must win a game on their home field on Thursday. Jon Rcid had an excellent meet by taking 3rd in the 100, 4th in the 200 and 4th in the long jump and was also on the 2nd place 4x100 relay team. James Nackos was 5th in the 100 and 200 and was also on the 4x100 relay. Darren Walker got a 6th place in the discus while Jason Leroy and Kevin Bess took 5th and 6th respectively in the javelin. The medley relay of Eric McConncll, Chris Stcffen.s, Sam Lee and Mark Boyack took 2nd place while the 4x400 relay of McConncll, Chad Nielsen, Jon Bicsinger and Chris Steffens took 5th. Everyone that finished in the top three automatically qualifies for the state meet and those that finished in the top 6 earned team points at the region re-gion meet. , r f - f i The Mountain Springs Girls' Track Athlete of the Week is Kristen Shaw. Golf lessons at Hobble Creek A series of four golf lessons designed for beginning golfers is scheduled al Hobble Creek Golf Course on Thursdays (May 24, 31 and June and 14) at 6 p.m., according to assistant professional Randy Rodriguez. Lessons include segments on the set up and swing, irons, woods and the short game including in-cluding putting and chipping. Cost for the four lesson scries is $35.
