Show Page Ten - The Springville Herald - May home sports Springville High Stand outs receive athletic awards The athletic department depart-ment of Springville High School held its thirteenth annual awards banquet Wednesday, May 23, in the high school auditorium. Guest speaker for the evening was Coach Roger Reid, assistant basketball coach at BYU and former SHS star. Athletic speaker was Alan Preston. A special presentation was made to the cheerleaders, flag twirlers, and drill team. Each received a long stemmed carnation in thanks for her support and enthusiasm. The pep band was also presented with a check for its support. Awards were presented to athletes who excelled during the year. Outstanding Out-standing football player award went to Mark Harding. Other football awards were: John DeHaas, best back; Don Bates, best lineman; Ken Howell, most inspirational; in-spirational; and Todd Tanner, most improved. Outstanding golfer was Jeff Roylance. In crosscountry, cross-country, John Men-denhall Men-denhall was named as outstanding senior and Randy Smith received the award as outstanding junior. The outstanding basketball award went to Mark Harding. Ken Howell received the John Gustin Award. Outstanding awards in swimming went to John DeHaas and Brenda Blanchard. Miss Blan-chard Blan-chard received her award in a special presentation at Utah Valley Hospital. Jeff Bateman and Cindy Smith were named most improved swimmers. Tennis named John Allan as most outstanding and Bob Hadley as most improved. In baseball, Sean Francis received both the outstanding player and highest batting average awards, while Mark Averett was the winner of the Golden Glove award. Dave Doty was the recipient of the outstanding out-standing track award and Jay Mower was named most improved. Two athletes Mark Harding and Ken Howell earned seven letters or more and received "S" pins. Patrick Henry 59 letters of accomplishment ac-complishment in sports were given to students who participated in one sport. 27 received letters for two sports, 14 lettered in three sports, and two Ken Howell and Gary DeHaas, lettered in four sports. Course offers lessons Golf classes for ladies and junior golfers will begin June 6 at Hobble Creek golf course. Junior classes begin at 9 a.m. 10:30 and the ladies at a.m. A fee of $5 will be charged for the five lessons which will cover every aspect of the game. The classes will be taught by Sonny Braun and Dave Crowton. Call the Golf Shop to register at 489-6297. Salt valley Thoroughbred Racing Association and the Ute Rangers are teaming up to put on ten races each day starting at 1 p.m. It's all for the benefit of the Ute Rangers Charities. The Ute Rangers are the official horse back posse of the highway patrol and they run many charitable programs. Genius is only great patience, Mapleton tennis lessons Registration is now being held for Mapleton City's tennis program. Schedule for classes is: Beginning class, Monday and Wednesday 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Intermediate class, Monday and Wednesday, 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. or Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Advanced class (team), Monday through Thursday, Thur-sday, 6 to 7:30 a.m. Classes will begin June 11 and run six weeks with two lessons per week. The gymnasts will perform on Thursday, June 7 at 7:3(1 p.m. at Park RoShe. 3 named to All-Region One Springville High School baseball player has been named to the first team All-Region VI baseball team and two others have been named to the second team. Receiving first team honors was Sean Francis. Mark Averett and Mike Bulow were named to the second team. Francis, a senior this year, recently graduated from Springville High School with high honors in college preparation. He was named Outstanding Baseball Player and the player with the highest batting average at .364. Francis played left field in the All-Star game yesterday in St. George. Sean will be attending BYU next year on a four year Presidential scholarship. Averett, a junior, was this year's recipient of the Golden Glove award. In addition, Averett was named Outstanding Junior Athlete ' and participated in football and basketball. Bulow, a junior also, participates in basketball and baseball at SHS. Gymnasts prep for program A special gymnastics. program featuring all ot the students at Park ko She will be held in con- nection with Art cuy Days on Thursday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m. The program will feature entertainment and acts designed to educate the audience regarding the sport of gymnastics. Tne program will include a comedy evmnastics act. dance technique warm up, mini trampoline, a display oi the four basic Olympic gymnastics events for women and vault and floor exercise for men, Class II and Class III routines from tne unuea States Gymnastic Federation will also be demonstrated. Each student from the very beginner to advanced ad-vanced gymnast will deomonstrate his or her skill. The public is invited to attend the ninety minute program free of charge. SHS netters at state The high school tennis . team took second in region losing only to Timpview and then competed in State 3A competitin. Qualifying for state were Paul Whiting No. 1 Singles, John Allan No. 2 Singles, Scott Wiscombe No. 3 Singles and 2nd Doubles team of Allan Wright and LaMar Wiscombe. Paul Whiting played fine tennis making the semi-finals tying for 3rd place being defeated by Dave Edmond of Ogden. Allan Wright and LaMar Wiscombe made the quarterfinals, but were defeated by Ogden. Team scores were Ogden 31 Timpview 17, Logan 10, Provo 10 Pleasant Grove 10, Springville 5, Tooele 5, Woods Cross 4, Cyprus 3, Ben Lomond 3 and Davis 3. Outstanding basketball player went to Maxine Giles. Conrad made SUSC Coach Don Conrad, a Springville native, has been named as new assistant baseball coach at Southern Utah State College. Conrad a 1973 graduate of SUSC, is currently head football coach and assistant baseball coach at Cyprus High School in Magna. He was named from a large number ot applicants for the position. Conrad was a four-year football letterman from 1969-1973 for the Thun-derbirds. Thun-derbirds. For three years he was named to the all-Rocky all-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team as a linebacker. In 1971 he was named to the NAIA honorable mention ail- American squad.
