Show Page Ten - The Spfingville Herald - February 8, 1979 Bevih dump Timpview m $tte berth battle.. By Sean Francis Lead by an awe-inspiring awe-inspiring 31-pont performance per-formance by Red Devil Mark Harding, the Springville basketball team gained an all-important all-important victory last Friday evening, as they clouted the Timpview Thunderbirds 69-58. The win gave the Devils a 5-8 Region Six record, good for fifth place in the Region. With three games remaining, and six teams getting bids for the State Tournament, this was a must win, and the Red Devils rose to the occasion, oc-casion, playing some of their most briliant basketball of the year. Mark Harding, who is no stranger to the stress and tension associated with high school basketball due to his three years of starting on the Red Devil team, began the Devils' victory with a bang, as he scored his team's first eight points. Six of these, the first six, came from the foul line, as Harding drew numerous fouls from the Timpview team. The fouls, in fact, were a little too abundant on both teams, as the referees held tight reins on the play. Harding was joined in the Devils' scoring T-Birds 10-1 in the remainder of the first quarter. Cary Hansen, a fine Springville sharpshooter, hit two long bombs to begin the second quarter, handing Springville a 22-12 22-12 lead. From there on in, it was a shooting match between Dave Nuen-shwander Nuen-shwander and Harding, as each slid through four baskets. Harding finished the half with 18 points, hitting 6 of 8 field goals and 6 of 9 foul shots, and Springville weathered a T-Bird comeback, taking a 32-23 half time lead. The Red Devils experienced ex-perienced a period of coldness as the third quarter was ushered in, and Timpview cut the Devil lead to 5 at 32-27. Springville, however, on their next possession converted a rare four-point four-point play, boosting the lead again to nine. Eric Keith bounced right back for the Birds, and Springville again held only a five-point advantage ad-vantage at 38-33. Then came the outburst of Devil power which set the die for the remainder of the game, and, in reality, earned the Devils their win. Springville, once again behind the magnificent play of and left and Eric Magelby swishing through foul shots, closed to a nervous six-point deficit at 54-48j but Mark Averett hit four of four foul shots, and Kenny Howell pushed in two cripples as the closing moments ticked away, assuring the Red Devils 69-58 advantage. Harding's 31 points were a landmark for him, as it was the first time in three years he has broken the 30-point mark. Mark has played to almost his full potential, in the last four games, and at times has been brilliant, even in a losing cause. He has averaged 22 points a game in this stretch, and if he can keep up this pace, alongside the entire team's totally improved play, the Devils can become very close to being, as Coach Elliot Jordan said "a helluva , team." Eric Keith paced the T-Birds T-Birds with 25 points, while Eric Magelby had 14 and Kenny Howell 13 for the two teams. Girls basketball 4-0 meet Provo tonight. Springville defeated Bowling Jordan High School in a practice game with high points going to Holly Baxter with 14, Maxine parade by Mark Averett I Harding, reeled off 11 and Kenny Howell, who ' points to Timpview's 2 each had two baskets, aiding Mark's 10 points and giving the Devils an early lead at 18-8. Many of the Springville five's baskets were layups, due not only to the fine assists being handed out but also because of the tight, pressing half-court press employed, which produced numerous steals and ensuring layups for the Devils. Timpview at one time was trailing by only one point, at 8-7, but Springville outscored the which gave the Devils a 49-35 lead, and turned a probable cliffhanger into a potential laugher. Timpview did score one more basket, but entering the fourth quarter, Springville led 49-37. Responsible for the Devil outburst were Cary Hansen, with two baskets, Kenny Howell with two baskets, and Harding, who contributed four more of his patented jumpers.
