Show Devils capture championship by Sean Francis The Springville Red Devil Baseball team won the first uncontested Region Six championship in the last few years Thursday as they dfeated Spanish Fork, 12-4. The Devils now enter the 3-A State Tournament at BYU as the top team from Region Six, where they will meet Woods Cross in the first game, and either Ogden or Cyprus in the second. The tournament was to have started Tuesday, May 16, but ram cancelled first days play. The Devils will probably play today at 5:30, depending on the weather and other factors. fac-tors. Kevin Hat- field, the Devil's ace, was on the mound for : Springville, while sophomore Curt Evans - started for Spanish Fork. Springville reeled off three base hits to start the first inning, but failed to score, as good defensive plays and risky baserunning cut two Devils down on the basepaths. Neither team scored until the third inning, when Springville posted three runs. After Dave Larsen, John Brinkerhoff and Chris Mecham had all reached base in assorted manners, Cary Hansen blooped a bases-loaded bases-loaded double down the right field line, scoring three runs and giving the Devils the first lead of the game. Springville scored three runs again in the fourth, as Mike Long, Dave Larsen, Mike Thompson, Chris Mecham and Cary Hansen all had singles. At the end of four, the score stood at 6-0. Kevin Hatfield was pitching well for Springville, but several outstanding catches in the outfield prevented Spanish Fork from mounting any kind of a comeback. Mike Long saved two runs by himself, him-self, as he threw one man out at the plate from left field, and also made a spectacular running grab of a long line drive. The fifth innning brought five more runs across for the Devils, giving them an un-surmountable un-surmountable 11-0 lead. Todd Whiting, John Brinkerhoff and Cary Hansen all collected RBI's this inning, Cary's being his fifth of the game. Neither team scored in the sixth inning, and Coach Elements substituted sub-stituted four Devils going into the last inning. Junior League Team Devils finsih fourth in region meet by Sean Francis The Springville Red Devil track team finished fourth in the Region Six Meet held last week in Provo, compiling 58 total points. The Devils finished behind Timpview, Timp-view, Cedar City, and Provo in the competition. Several Devils did very well in the meet. David Doty, who is a sophomore this year, grabbed a first place in the shot put, with a throw of 51-2 M. Robert Ames, the Devil's State Champion Wrestler, also did well in this event, finishing second to Doty with a throw of 50-5 John Mendenhall, The Devil's top two miler, placed second in this event, even though he had his best time of the year and set a new school record. Brad Smith tied for second in the pole vault with a vault of 12-45. Eric Strong came up with a fifth place in the 440 race, and Mark Harding took fourth in the 880 with a time of 208. Devil JV's finish season with win by Sean Francis The Springville Red Devil Junior Varsity Baseball team ended a successful season on a winning note last Wednesday, Wed-nesday, as they defeated Provo, 7-6, in an extra inning game. The win gave the Devil team a 7-3 record for the year, with two of these losses being by one point. The Devils came from behind to win the game, when down 6-2, scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and tied the game. Alan Preston started the inning with a single, and was followed by Kenny Howell, who reached base on an error, scoring Preston. Sean Francis then hit a ground ball single through the infield, scoring Howell. Glen Kelsey, designated hitter for the Devils, then collected one of his three hits of the game, scoring Francis. Kelsey then scored on another Provo error. Provo 's big inning was the third, as they scored three runs in an inning highlighted by a terrific home run off the bat of Tennis classes begin June 5 The Springville City Summer Tennis Program will commence Monday June 5, and continue until Friday July 28, it was announced bv Glenn Bird. James Frisby and John DeHaas both did well in field events, James placing fourth in the discus and John garnering gar-nering a fifth in the Javelin. The team this year was coached by Bill Salisbury, who did an excellent job. Leading batter this year for the junior varsity team was Mark Averett, who finished with a .367 average. T-ball tryouts set May 20 Tryouts for T-ball will be held Saturday May 20 behind the Brookside school at 9 a. m. All those who have not registered must register by try out time. The fee is $10. members (ages 15-18) will meet Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7 to 8 a.m., and Friday mornings from 8 to 9 a.m. Intermediate boys will meet Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8 to 9 a.m. Wendy Dewsnup will be the instructor for the girl's program, and all girl's lessons will be given at the Springville Jr. High School courts according to the following schedule. Beginning girls will meet from either 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. or from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday and Wednesday. Junior League Team members (ages 15-18) will meet Monday and Wednesday mornings from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Intermediate girls will meet from either 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. or from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Little League Team members (ages 8-14) will meet Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Participants are en couraged to pay for their 16 lessons by check. Checks should be made payable to "Springville City," and payment should be made at the time of registration, Registration will be held on the day and at the time students wish to take their lessons. Tennis balls will be furnished, but each student must have his own tennis racket. For additional information contact either Glenn Bird (489-5314) or Wendy Dewsnup (489-5836) between the hours of 7 and 10 p.m. Soccer league begins July 1 0 Brigham Young University will be sponsoring a youth soccer league June 10 through July 30 according to Jim Dusara, soccer coach at BYU. TheJeague will be open to boys, girls and adults under six age groups. The registration fee is $25 which will be used to provide game uniforms, balls for the league, once a week practice under the supervision of those who will be teaching the rules and skills of the game, league games (every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 12 noon) and for referee fees.
