One of golf's all time greats and now in the twilight of a brilliant career spanning more than two decades, the 46-year-old Casper was the only one elected in the Modern Era Category by members of the Golf Writers Association of America. Two other nominees, Lee Trevino and Louise Suggs, failed for the second consecutive year. Trevino, winner of five major championships and a number of other PGA tour tournaments received 105 votes out of a total of 167 cast. Suggs, one of the greatest players in the history of the LPGA, tallied 112 votes. It required 75 percent or 125 votes of the total cast, to be elected into the Hall of Fame and Casper made it comfortably with 133 votes. Casper , now living in Mapleton, Utah, with is wife, Shirley and 11 children, joined the tour in 1955. He won money in his first tournament $33.33 in the Portland and he has been winning ever -since. Ironically, the individual who initially helped Casper launch his golfing career in San Diego, Calif., was Don Collett, President and Executive Director of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Collett arranged sponsors for Casper and wrote his original contract on a napkin in the men's grill of the San Diego Country Club. It called for $650 per month , a credit card, a new car and a house trailer. The rest is golf history ! A deadly putter with a short game to match, Casper was the second golfer in the history of the game to win one million dollars, Arnold Palmer being the first ; and his career earnings now total $1,662,214. He is the tour's number four all time career money winner behind Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Lee Trevino. His 51 tour victories place him sixth on the all time list behind Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer and Byron Nelson. In Casper's distinguished Si-year-year-career he has won 51 PGA tour titles, including the U.S. Open in 1959 and 1966, and the Masters in 1970. He has been named PGA Player of the year twice, in 1966 and 1970, and is the only player in the history of golf to have won the Vardon Trophy five times. The .Vardon Trophy is given for the low scoring average on the PGA tour. The most dramatic win of his long time career came in the 1966 U.S. Open at the Olympic Country Club in San Francisco when he defeated Palmer in an 18-hole playoff for the champ-sionship champ-sionship Wielding a deadly putter, Casper picked up seven strokes on the last nine holes, shooting 32 to Palmer's 39, and he virtually did the same thing again in the playoff. Palmer jumped off to an early lead and held a two stroke advantage at the turn, 33 to 35, but once again a combination of a collapse by Palmer and spirited rally by Casper earned the Utahn the title by four strokes 69-73. Thus, in a span of 27 holes the last nine of the final round and in the 18-hole playoff Casper picked up an incredible in-credible 13 strokes on Palmer to post one of the most dramatic wins in U.S. Open history. Casper joins four other immortals who were voted into the Hall of Fame last month Harold Hilton and Dorothy Campbell Hurd Howe in the Pre-Modern Era category (before 1930), and Bing Crosby in the Distinguished Service category. Both Crosby and Roberts died in 1977. They will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 1978, during Pinehurst's "Grand Week of Golf" celebration which features the Colgate-Hall Colgate-Hall of Fame Golf Classic, a $250,000 event on the PGA Tour.
