Family home evening stresses beautification A special family home evening on clean-up and beautification has been prepared for Utah Valley residents by the local Communications Council of the IDS Church. The home evening, for member and non-member non-member families alike, is designed to teach principles prin-ciples of cleanliness, industry and beautification, and to encourage organized family involvement in clean-up and beautification projects. It is presented as part of the month-long Utah Valley Beautiful program now being sponsored by the Utah Valley Area Public Communications Council. "This family home evening should be a useful tool to Utah Valley families in following President Kimball's council to keep in good repair and beautify homes, yards, farms and business," said Lee Nelson, director of the Utah Valley Beautiful project. Families are encouraged to use the home evening during the month of May. Families wishing to use the lesson outline should cut it out and save it for use any Monday night in May. Cleanup and Beautification Objective: To discuss and understand the prophets' counsel to cleanup and beautify homes, and then select, plan and carry out inJ dividual and family clean-up and beautification projects. Suggestions for Family Involvement Have a family member read the above passage then ask for opinions as to why the prophet wants our homes to be neat, clean and beautiful. Answers might include: 1) beauty and cleanliness are uplifting to the Spirit, 2) There is less conflict and frustration in a home where everything is in its place, 3) There is more contentment in a home where one isn't surrounded by numerous unfinished tasks; unmade beds, dirty dishes, books and clothing and toys strewn on the floor, messy desks, etc. 4) Neat, clean and beautiful homes are happier homes. Show a picture of an LDS Temple and ask someone to describe the exterior appearance of the building and grounds. Then ask someone who has been in a temple to describe the clean, organized, "everything-in-its-place" atmosphere in the House of the Lord. Ask: Why should our home be neat and orderly and in good repair, like the House of the Lord? Possible answer: So the Spirit of the Lord can dwell in our home too. Ask : Why is it easier for the Spirit of God to dwell in a neat and orderly home? Possible answers: Less conflict, more peace of mind inducive to listening to the Spirit. Ask: What are some things that need to be done in our home to make it a better place for the Spirit of the Lord to reside? Discuss individual in-dividual projects first, then, a group project that the entire family can do together. a) Individual projects. -Before the home evening, write on small slips of paper the various cleanup and beautifications tasks that need to be done around the home. Let family members draw tasks randomly out of a hat, or volunteer for the various assignments. It is important that the family secretary record what each person agrees to do. These minutes should be read at the next family meeting, or posted on the wall so no one will forget to do his or her tasks. Families with small children.-Insert the slips of paper with tasks written on them into balloons. Blow up and tie the balloons. Some of the Basketball was invented in-vented by Canadian-born Dr. James Naismith in 1891 when he was working with the Springfield, Mass. YMCA. Today, basketball is played everywhere in the world! There are three cities listed in the record books as being the smallest in America, only .4 square miles in area: Belvedere, California, Bonne Terre, Missouri, and Montgomery, Mon-tgomery, West Virginia. "All authority belongs to the people." Thomas Jefferson slips of paper may include in-clude treats or privileges, such as revealing where a piece of candy is hidden, or being a ticket to sleep with Mom and Dad on Saturday night. The children, and possible older members too, should take turns selecting balloons and popping them. Because some of the tasks may be unsuitable to the recipients, a few minutes of trading may be permitted per-mitted after all the balloons have been popped. Assignments should be recorded by the family secretary. b) Group project. --Select --Select a cleanup or beautification project the family can do together, in and around you own home, or that of grandparents, grand-parents, or perhaps Dad's business. Organize the project so every family member has something to do. Again, see that all individual and group assignments are recorded in the minutes, so no one will forget an assignment. "Keep in good repair and beautify your homes, yards, farms and business. Repair fences, clean up and paint where needed. Keep your lawns and gardens well groomed. Whatever your circumstances cir-cumstances let your premises reflect orderliness, or-derliness, beauty, and happiness... Let us dedicate ourselves to strengthening and beautifying the home in every way we can." Spencer W. Kimball VICKS DAYCARE Daytime colds Medicine 6 Fl. Or.
