That's the practical advice of a Provo psychologist and educator in a small book just released bv the BYU Press appropriately entitled "If You're Mad, Spit! And Other Aids to Coping." The author is Dr. Ben F. Mortensen, a clinical psychologist for 20 years in four mental hospitals and a private practice and, since last July, Dean of the School of Health Occupations for Utah Technical College at Provo. He offers no easy solutions or no miracle cures. But he does offer a lifetime of experience gained in working with people out in the hard realities of the world, not just the ivy tower of a university or the confines of a plush office. He came to Utah Technical College at Provo last July after 4Vi years at the Utah State Hospital in Provo. A combination of a good opportunity at Utah Tech plus the unrest resulting from management upheavals at the hospital prompted him to make' the move. Prior to that he had been a clinical psychologist at the VA Hospital in Salt Lake City, the Arizona State Hospital and Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento, California. He also worked for four years as a consulting psychologist with business and industry. His knowledge of veterans' problems comes firsthand. An army chaplain in Korea, he was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action. Since he didn't carry a gun, it came from helping others under fire. For the Silver Star, he and his assistant carried a wounded lieutenant back to an aid station, then to a litter jeep, and when a shell burst almost on top of them, Chaplain Mortensen threw himself on top of the wounded lieutenant. It tore Mor-tensen's Mor-tensen's flak jacket to shreds, knocked him unconscious and burned him. His action saved the lieutenant, who was evacauted and lived. In another action, when his infantry unit went to the support of a shot-to-pieces ROK (Republic of Korea) outfit, he was awarded the Korean Chung-Mu medal for bravery. Again, it was for his aid to the wounded. Most of the 10 chapters are essays or revisions of essays or lectures, made' and written over his 20 . years of practice. Some , are current with the publication of the book. They include: 1. How to be an effective ef-fective counselor. 2. How to treat troubled teenagers. 3. How to help others be honest. 4.
