Crockery cookers put through test After testing two dozen electric "crockery" cookers, Consumers Union concludes that most people would likely favor the type with only two heat settings. Those that offer a variety of thermostatically controlled settings performed much less predictably, the nonprofit consumer advisory organization says. Tests conducted for the November issue of Consumer Reports, CU's monthly, showed that the slow cookers could safely cook a meal while a person is at work or asleep for the night using about the same energy that an electric range would use to cook a stew. The testers found a problem with one model, the Presto LC 1. It was rated Not Acceptable because the low thermostat setting suggested for some recipes in its instruction book produced too low a temperature. In ;some samples of the Presto, the magazine explained, food may remain too long within the range of temperature favorable to bacteria growth. Consumer Reports also says that the low setting on one tested Presto LCI did not produce temperatures high enough to kill trichinosis parasites that are sometimes present in pork or even beef. All other samples of all models tested reached safe cooking temperatures. However " the magazine warns that "keep' warm' settings should not be used for cooking since their temperatures may be too low for safety. Noting that many slow cookers have short cords, Consumer Reports says that if an extension cord is used it must have a sufficient capacity or it could overheat and cause a fire. Slow cookers with removable liners are the easiest to clean, and those with detachable cords can be used as servers, Consumer Con-sumer Reports points out. It advises that some cuts of meat may not cook properly without turning in slow cookers that are shallow or unusually wide. An evaluation of five recipe-books recipe-books for slow cookers is also included in the November Consumer Reports. the meat group and bread and cereals. If vitamins are so important, why are healthy, normal people advised not to use vitamin pills? The answer is that foods properly selected and prepared provide all the nutrients needed for good nutrition. Only a physician can adequately advise you if you have a need for supplemental doses of vitamins.
