Show Page Four The Springville Herald July 13, 1972 BLUE MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS Bertram S. Brown, M.D., Director National Institute of Mental Health R rival. BONNET - I 4-4 Depressive Illness Depression, or depressive illness, ill-ness, is a very widespread disorderor dis-orderor group of illnesses just about everyone knows. But there are ways in which patients suffering from this affliction can be helped. Shelley Rowe. daughter of Kenneth and Sharon Bird Rowe, celebrated her first birthday on Tuesday, July 11. ; f Heidi Ann Poulson, daughter of Douglas and Sandra Poulson now of Salt Lake City and formerly of this city, will celebrate her first birthday with a party on July 18, Li f yT Melissa Moon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Moon of this city, celebrated her first birthday on July 8. For example, it has frequently frequent-ly been observed by clinical psychiatrists and psychologists that patients suffering depressive depres-sive illness are helped by successful suc-cessful experiences in a variety of kinds of actions. A tangible demonstration to a depressed patient that he can successfully atttain a stated goal can lessen his pessimism, improve his self-esteem, and enhance motivation. Research scientists have been exploring this in a study in Pennsylvania aided by a grant from tbe National Institute of Mental Health. The theory tested was that tbe depressed patient is so sensitive sen-sitive to positive or negative information in-formation about himself that a minor success or failure even on a seemingly irrelevant task would affect his self-evaluation, expectancies, and performance. The scientists developed the study with the cooperation of male patients at two Philadelphia Philadel-phia psychiatric outpatient clinics, clin-ics, using both depressed and non-depressed patients. The depressed patients were more pessimistic from the outset out-set about doing well on an experimental ex-perimental task of sorting out some cards. When asked how they had done, the depressed gave lower ratings to their own performance than did the non-depressed non-depressed groups. The researchers research-ers found, however, that the actual output of the depressed groups was just as good. A second, more difficult card-sorting task was given. Some depressed patients who bad succeeded on the first test were told of their success. Others were not told, but continued con-tinued to think that they had failed. On the second test, those who had been told of their success suc-cess showed more optimism, . had higher goals, and gave a better performance than did those who thought that they had failed. The scientists concluded that specific, favorable information about successful experience not only improves the depressed patient's outlook and level of aspiration, but also can increase in-crease his productivity. Teacher Influence The fact of the influence of school teachers' expectations of what their Student may do upon what they actually achieve has' long been known. But new 'light is being shed upon exactly how this happens and works. Do teachers somehow let their students know that they expect high or low performance from them and as a result get what they expect? Several studies have indicated indi-cated that students who are expected ex-pected to do well receive treatment treat-ment more likely to cause them to bring in good work. Differences in teacher behavior be-havior in this regard have recently re-cently been studied in 7th grade classrooms in an inner-city junior high school. Participating teachers were asked to rank the students in their classes in order of their achievements. The ratings were used as a measure of teachers' expectations for the students' classroom performances. Overall results indicated that there were differences in the interactions of the teachers with the students at various achievement levels. Food Economizing A Bore? Try This And Bore No More r V ' .
