Whether almost commonplace twenty and thirty percent per-cent wage settlement packages have been the symptom or the cause of a sick economy can be debated, but it cannot be denied that they happened. Business seemed helpless to do anything but accept the big wages and raise prices. Meanwhile, foreign countries, without strict pollution controls con-trols and relatively lower living standards for their workers, work-ers, were taking over the American markets in product after product. I, Hopefully, free economic competition conducted with , at rulebook that is fair to all will come soon. Meanwhile, Congress should initiate legislation to provide a more equitable balance in the collective bargaining process. n Levi 3 MEMBER OF THE EDITORIAL NEEDED: A CUTOFF VOU CAN'T BEAT THIS FOR n Levi White and Brown SLACKS $6.98 VALUE Super REG. $6.50 160 North Main Spanish p(DDa)Q x n Slims Fork We have just concluded the high school football program and are getting into the swing of basketball. I wonder how many of us stop to analyze the importance im-portance of athletics in our school programs. Sure, it's easy to criticize the coach, knock the kids and cuss the referee, but there are an awfully lot of good things which come from high school athletics. For the community com-munity it provides an identity. To people in each community it is "their team" and they look with pride on the accomplishment ac-complishment of "their boys." It is the one activity in the community com-munity which involves all segments of the community on a regular basis where all people have a common goal, which is to have their team win. Athletics can do much to develop pride within a community, not only by promoting winning teams, but by developing good attitudes and good sportsmanship. Can you imagine what a school would be like without various types of activities? In particular athletics helps generate a spirit of unity within a school. It provides a common goal, something with which every student can become occupied. It builds the competitive spirit so important in the American way of life. Although some say our young people have too much activities, they would have to admit that a Friday night ball game is a fine, wholesome activity. ac-tivity. Many educational leaders are critical of the small number of boys involved in the basketball program. Usually only twelve or fifteen are selected from the entire studentbody for a team and only seven or eight of those boys actually play a great deal of basketball. However, let us analyze the participation by other students in the basketball program. As an example, cheerleaders develop special tumbling skills and the qualities of leadership to direct an entire studentbody. Girls ban together in a pep club to provide a cheering section to sustain an enthusiastic, positive school spirit. Others form precision marching units, which together with marching bands or pep bands, involve many other students directly. Altogether, including the basketball team, there are more than a hundred students engaged at every game. In Nebo school this is well over ten percent of the students directly involved in one activity or another. Besides, all other students who wish to come, as well as people of the community, can become intensely involved as spectators. We can all provide explanations ex-planations of the many personal Dr. Joe A. Reidhead gains which the athletic program makes for the individual in-dividual team player. But there are many gains for the student spectator too. He identifies with his friend on the team; it gives him someone he looks up to. The image created by many of the outstanding high school athletes borders on "hero worship." For the individual team member, perhaps the major thing that the athletic program does for him is to strengthen his character by requiring that he stick to a personal commitment. He must first try out and win a position on the team by his own merits. Then he must follow through in the rigorous practice sessions and discipline himself throughout the long, tough season. It is quite a miracle to see how the boys on the team weld themselves into a very unified group, even though originally they come from different cliques and social groups of the school. Although winning games is their main goal, they also develop strong feelings of loyalty and cooperation. Friendships develop which last a lifetime. Athletics also requires a strict discipline. Players must learn to take orders from the coach - a tough boss, play for the team, keep training rules, etc. They develop special talents in planning, play execution, timing, conditioning of the mind and body, sustaining a positive effort even when facing a loss, promptness, appreciation for other's special skills, strict training habits, and many others. A side benefit is the very positive effect all of this has on the other students in the school as they see the example of the athlitic team members, who usually become the outstanding leaders of the school. In the final analysis we might sum it all up by saying that athletics build men and leaders. Remember, we all complain about referees, coaches and etc., but we would be the first to fight and the first to complain if athletics were cut from the school program. Not only , is it beneficial to young people but it is as American as hot dogs and apple pie. 97onfau The following daytime television proqrams -are loqoed on a regular Monday throuoh Friday basis.
