J Teen-agers often make more use of their - rooms than do adults. In-many cases, it is the one area of the house which provides privacy from parents as well as brothers and sisters. It is used for sleeping, dressing, dress-ing, grooming, hobbies, entertaining enter-taining friends and (hopefully) studying. So it becomes more than just a room it is an environment, a sanctuary in the world. A room which i serves so many functions needs j lighting which will not only satisfy sat-isfy many seeing requirments, but catch the fancy of a young person as well. If the room is small, as so many are today, it can be visually vis-ually enlarged by lighting walls and other vertical surfaces. This can be done by using fluorescent or incandescent cornices or valances. Cornices fit up against the ceiling, traveling tra-veling the entire length of the room. Valances extend the length of the drapery. Light track, and electrified strip which can be surface-mounted and equipped with one or more light fixtures, is available commercially and can accomplish accom-plish the same purpose. Grooming and make-up, an important part of a teen's wardrobe, requires an ample amount of light. Dresser lamps with highly translucent shades and controlled by a three-way switch provide the necessary light. For a more dramatic effect, you can buy or make a theatrical-type make-up mirror mir-ror using globe-shape lamp bulbs. . . Study areas are important, because if well lighted, your teen-ager can get more accomplished ac-complished in less time with less fatigue. Start in this area by covering the surrounding surfaces in a light color. A tackboard painted a light color and mounted on the wall behind be-hind the desk adds versatility. The desk or study area may then be lighted with a Better Light, Better Sight (BLBS) study lamp. Now that you have your room lighted well for study, makeup, make-up, and general illumination, why not add a few personal touches? For instance, black-light black-light posters which you can buy or paint yourself with fluorescent paint may be lighted light-ed with a blacklight available in tubular or bulb form. Be sure to shield blacklights from direct viewing, as you would any light source. Light art can add another personal touch. Available - as pulsating, everchanging kinetic ki-netic art, sound-triggered light, "sprays" of light, or the more subdued sculptured forms, it can inject fun and excitment into your room. There are so many ways to create a pleasing and personal environment in a room. For further information, write for "The Light Book."
