Show May 27, 1971 The Springville Herald Page Nine OBITUARIES rJMm : . - i mm L-3$&zr i k"VMli TT I v rmrrjrraii ortnrr MEMBER OF THE Published Weekly by ART CITY PUBLISHING COMPANY at 161 Sooth Main, Springville, Utah 84663 PUBLISHER, MARTIN CONOVER Second class postage paid at Springville, Utah 84663 Subscription in advance, per year, $5.50 per copy, 10c EDITORIAL THE MINIMUM WAGE Considerable pressure is being exerted on Congress Con-gress to increase the minimum wage right now to $2 an hour, rather than wait until 1973 as proposed in a House bill. The proponents contend that the increase would give the economy a lift by creating additional spending spend-ing power. This is fallacious reasoning. Minimum-wage jobs are given to those who lack the experience or know-how to step into higher wage brackets. They are the first step in the ladder. By removing this bottom rung, not only will many of these jobs be eliminated, but all Mages will be pushed up so that inflationary price increases soon would blunt any benefits from the increase. When you add these factors to the increased difficulty that employers will have with lower-wage competitors overseas, it seems likely that a higher minimum wage will do more harm than good to those it is intended to benefit. Pet-tigrew, Pet-tigrew, the railroad's chief traffic officer. ..."This reduction; will open up a new market' for semi-finished steel from Geneva. It puts Chicago in Utah's back yard economically speaking," the rail officer explained. The rate is effective immediately im-mediately and will reduce shipping costs substantially, Pettigrew said. "For instance, under the new, rate it will be possible to move one ton of steel one mile for about one and two-thirds cents.
