Show Page Four The Springvillc Herald May 27, 1971 Senior 'Student of the Week' Carol Clement, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle E. Clement, has been chosen as senior of the week at SHS. She has participated par-ticipated in such activities as orchestra, and the German Club. Carol Clement j yC J from the Herald files 10 years ago ( May 25, 1961 ) Graduation exercises will be held Friday night with the theme, "No Man is an Island Unto Himself." Giving speeches are Ruth Bramall, Steven Sumsion, Don Holdaway, John Reese, Paul Cherrington, Gena Palfreyman and Richard Taylor. Sage Inn Restaurant at 1250 North Main opened this week. Frank C. Robertson's "Ram in the Thicket" appeared in condensed con-densed form in the current issue of Readers Digest. Poppy Day is planned for Saturday by the Legion Auxiliary. Maria Shepers funeral services ser-vices were held today in the First Ward. Eloise Blanchard has won a scholarship given by the Utah State Department of Public Instruction for prospective teachers. Howard C. Maycock has been called to serve as president of the North German mission. He and his family will leave in July. Harry James will be honored at a farewell Sunday prior to leaving for a mission to the South-West Indian mission. Howard 'V;' Weight was recently named winner of the J. Marinus Jensen Short Story contest conducted by BYU. Marvin Reid is home from the Australian Mission. Also home from his mission to North British Mission is Roger L. Johnson. This year Carol was recognized for outstanding performance throughout her high school years when she was chosen as the outstanding girl four year scholar; an award which goes only to those who have achieved consistently in their education. Active in her church, Carol is a graduate of LDS Seminary and has completed the fourth year program, where she is serving as secretary of her class. She is serving on the Bishop's youth council in the Mapleton First Ward. She has received five individual awards and is planning to participate in June, conference this summer. During her spare time, Carol enjoys hiking, sewing, cooking, sports, dancing, and singing. Upon graduation, she plans to attend BYU on a scholarship she recently received. At present her interest lies in the field of German. Mrs. Keith (Marva) Davis was elected president of the District 4 American Legion Auxiliary. Lucy Phillips, beloved faculty member at Snow College for more than three decades, will be honored at a public program Saturday at Snow during class reunions. Engagement news included that of Kathleen Bennett to Win. Jack Shaw. They will be wed in June. Memorial Day races at Spring Acres will start Saturday. 20 years ago One hundred and eighteen seniors will receive diplomas at exercises Friday in the high school gymnasium under the direction of Principal Paul K. Walker. Charles Boyer was recently appointed chairman of the city board of adjustment. Dates for the Sportsman's Outing are set for June 9 and 10 at Balsam. Robert (Bob) Kensinger, serving in Korea, was awarded the Purple Heart. " Ronald1 Tew was elected ' president of the SHS FFA for the coming year. ' Sgt. Rotfert ' G. Burgi has received the bronze star in recognition for his heroic achievement near Yongho, Korea. Barbara Hall has returned from a mission to California. Private Harold A. Norton has completed 14 weeks of basic to become a regular member of the 701st Military Police battalion Co. C at Ft. MacArthur, California. Midshipman Third Class Robert B. Eddington, USN, is receiving training in aviation ditching procedures at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. through use of the "Dilbert Dunker." Miss Peggy Crandall is among more than 1,000 USAC students graduating this spring. Engagement news includes that of Miss Carolee Irene Childs and Howell Newman. Gayle M. Aldred, Mapleton and Kay E. McKean, California, exchanged wedding vows in Honolulu earlier this year and were announced this week. Miss Helen Storey became the bride of Cpl. Donald H. Hurst and are making their home in Texas.
