Liberal Allowance Made for Your Old Carl Mndiey .Rqney"s L5ve a a Second Chapter RIGHT after-1 sneaked out of mom's dressing, room that night when I was 18 months old and -walked right onto the stage and sang a song, I got my rfirst offer. Sid Gold and Babe LaTour made it, and A theatrical trunk was his I crib. He cut his baby teeth on a stick of frrease- paint. An actor at the age of 11 months, Sv veteran trouper at 10, a star Bt 18 and today the box-oMiee champion of all Hollywood and the winner In National polls la aelect the best male star of 1933. It's fantastic It's Rooney. . Here's the second ef six chapters by himself. the reason was that I had busted into their act to ging the song, They asked mom if I could be in the act as a regular attraction. That's how I got my start. It was like playing a game. Mom says I was a natural mimic and imitating imitat-ing people was easy. - Being Be-ing a baby, actors thought whatever I said or did waa cute. They taught . me jokes and showed me dance steps. A kid can get away with a lot with an audience because it's funny to see a little tike doing stunts. To me, it wasn't work, but fun. It always has been. I did my turn with Gold and LaTour until I was two. By then, I had a routine of my own. It was a song-and-dance act and X was billed under my real name, Joe Yule Jr. Jokee Were Corny X don't like to be reminded of the jokes I pulled. .Wa-boo, were they "corny! Mom says I bad a lisp. Gee, bow I burn when she tells her favorite. It went, 'Have you beard the ona about the saucer of milk 7" Trq, answer was. "It's the cat's.' . That's Just a sample of me as a baby. - - i, A doctor once wanted to ex amine my ears. He said I had a "recording ear," or something. Anyway, 1 played the piano by ear and I can repeat almost any. thing I bear. When I was two. and-a-half, I did my first imita-, ticn. It was of the. Two Black Crows, which was " the hottest things In vaudeville then. 'I learned to imitate Moran and Mack from phonograph record-: lngs. I played both parts. I would start out on one side of the stage as Moran , and say; "The early bird catches the worm." Then I ran to the otheiv side of the stage and spoke J Mack's line, "What worm?" : l The first time I tried the imi-' tation was to Chicago. It was going swell until I forgot my lines. I don't usually , do that. But the training 1 got from vaudeville actors helped me that night as it still does. I cracked, "The record's stuck," That was the earliest gag X originated, al-tho. al-tho. I probably had heard Mom say. It. . It stayed in the act as long as I did the Moran and Mack imitation and was good for a laugh. That's the funny thing about gag The best ones .. Just pop out unexpectedly. When I 'was four years old. Mom says I was exactly 36-lnches 36-lnches tali. That was when she bought me the tailored suit made out of a yard of cloth, the one she keeps in the trunk. I had a FOR SALE AUTOS BETTER BUY. In this suit he went to call on Al Smith to get a special acting ' permit. - .", ;-. . . cap to. go. with it, but it'a.been lost ' The reason Mom had the suit made for me was to meet a man who is my best friend and the greatest man X know, - Governor Helps Him X didn't know it, but Mom was worried because there are people that try to. keep kids from going on the stage. It wasn't like it is now -in Hollywood, where all the studios have . schools and kids have to study three hours a day and play games for one hour. Of course, I've passed that stage since I graduated "from high school last year and am planning to go to college. When I was dressed in my suit, I've always worn long pants, Mom took me to the city hall. It didn't mean anything to me then that the man I was going to meet was Alfred E. Smith, who was governor of New -York. He was the first person who ever treated me a grown man and didn't ask siuy . questions. He was serious, but he was jovial, to, Just like you would expect him to be. We talked about my career and I sang a song and danced for him. He slapped his knee and said it was fine. - Afterwards he gave Mom a . work . permit that allowed al-lowed me to go on with my act Aided By Many Mr. Smith and I have been friends ever since. Traveling around the country in my act I met many people who helped me. : Among those I remember best are Jim Morton, Mor-ton, who was billed as the animated ani-mated program and introduced each act with a gag. There was Carl McCullough, my . favorite . comedian. Some of the vaudeville vaude-ville headliners when I. was doing do-ing my act are now in Hollywood, Holly-wood, Roger Imhoff, Charley Grapewin, Jack Haley, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Lockhart and Sophie Tucker. , When I was five, Mom was afraid that working and the bad weather in the winter would be too much for me. She wanted me to go to school and besides, she has always said that she wanted me to 'grow up a healthy, normal boy. I . think 1 am just an average boy. I try to be. s- Mom took me to Kansas City and we stayed . with her folks again for a while. Some friends were driving to Hollywood and Mom had a chance to go with them if she paid our way. Her share of the expenses was to buy a new tire. Mom says that was the most Important deci- . sion she ever made and , it took a lot of thinking. She figured that the climate would be good . for me and I could go to school and work in pictures' if there was a chance. Hollywood didn't mean & thing to me then,, but it worked out fine.
