Farley Far-ley is being plagued by charges of "bootlegging" in the $8,500,000 stamp collecting business. The trouble started when the postoffice sent postmasters thru-out thru-out the nation, stamps in the "Famous American' series, to be held off the public market until after first iday sales in selected cities. Before the "coming- out" party for the Ralph Waldo Emerson stamp in Boston Feb. 5, letters bearing the cancelled stamp began coming in from the west. The Rait Lake City, Utah, post office had,, made "the first day' sale Jan. 27, according to postal sources. sourc-es. Similar lapses involved post offices at Rockville, Md.; Harris-burg, Harris-burg, pa.; and Summerville, S. C. Philatelists went into a huddle to determine what should be the status ot the ."bootleg" stamps. Old - timers contended these stamps should be blacklisted, with no value. The aggressive philatelists, philatel-ists, who have helped Farley build it into the postal service's most lucrative sideline, figured that a stamp with a cancellation prior to the official poVt office department release certainly waa worth money. shop class after school beginning Monday.
