Show A7 Vernal Express SPECIAL Wednesday, April 23, 2008 Public Safety Continued from A6 Morning blaze destroys trailer An early morning fire Sunday gutted a Monarch family's camp trailer. Neola Fire Chief Rex Olsen said his department and firefighters fire-fighters from the Roosevelt Fire Department were paged out shortly before 3 a.m. to the blaze that destroyed the trailer owned by Chester Webster. Webster and his family were living in the trailer, Olsen said, and lost the entire trailer and all of their personal items. The chief said Webster reported the value of the lost property at $1,000. The cause of the fire is undetermined un-determined and remains under investigation. Olsen said the cooperation between Roosevelt and Neola allowed firefighters to extinguish the blaze "very quickly." Two women hurt in crash A 20-year-old Roosevelt woman was cited for following too closely after Utah Highway Patrol troopers said she rear-ended rear-ended another woman Thursday on U.S. Highway 40. Troopers said Lindsay Clark was driving west on the highway near Gary's Insulation when she ran into the back of a red sport utility vehicle driven by 47-year-old Betsy Chapoose of Neola. Chapoose had stopped briefly in the road, UHP Trooper Rex Olsen said, to allow a truck in front of her to turn off the highway high-way into a business entrance. She had just begun to accelerate again when she was hit. Clark suffered bruises to her chest, Olsen said, while Chapoose was cut above her left eye. Both women were taken to Uintah Basin Medical Center by ambulance. ambu-lance. Olsen said a Duchesne County sheriffs deputy and two Roosevelt Roos-evelt police officers helped investigate the crash and direct traffic. Ballard fuel service approved By Preston McComm Uintah Basin News Service Truck fleets, mines, oil rigs and eventually smaller outfits like farms and ranches are expected ex-pected to benefit from increased competition in the bulk fuel delivery business, now that the Ballard Town Council has approved ap-proved a new fuel farm near U.S. Highway 40. In the city's northeast quarter, on what Ballard Mayor Tom Nordstrom Nor-dstrom called the Brough property, prop-erty, Cardwell Distributing Inc. plans to build storage tanks for 220,000 gallons of fuel, starting with about 120,000 gallons for diesel and later adding capacity for between 30,000 and 60,000 gallons of gasoline. The tanks will only be accessed ac-cessed by Cardwell trucks, either delivering fuel from refineries or making deliveries to area customers. custom-ers. Cardwell Vice President Tom Leiter said initially they will only accept orders of about 4,000 gallons, gal-lons, but as the facility is built out orders as low as 500 gallons will eventually be taken. "We take care of a lot of ranches in Wyoming," Leiter said. "We'll do about anything that has a need for petroleum products." The Cardwell project was approved at last Tuesday's town council meeting following a positive recommendation by the Ballard Planning and Zoning Board. Darrin Brown, environmental environmen-tal health director for the Tri-County Tri-County Health Department, attended the council meeting and questioned Leiter about safety issues such as the size of tanks and protective berms, and whether a protective fabric lining would be pierced by utility pipes. Leiter assured Brown the lining would be solid, with would be no pipes leaving the facility, and that plans met or exceeded safety regulations. Leiter said the first storage tanks could be operating "with wishful thinking, in the best case, at the end of May. In the worst case, maybe the end of June." He said most of the equipment has already been delivered from manufacturers, and is being stored at other Cardwell facilities.
