Roosevelt Police Sgt. Jeremy Chapman said he was working a drug interdiction shift for the Uintah Basin Narcotics Strike Force when he spotted a Green sport utility vehicle without a front license plate. Chapman said the SUV was making frequent fre-quent lane changes, prompting him to initiate a traffic stop in the parking lot of the Maverik convenience store at 310 S. 200 East in Roosevelt. Chapman said as he approached ap-proached the vehicle the driver sped off, driving into the neighborhood neigh-borhood below Movie Gallery. The driver then took State Street back across U.S. Highway 40, running a red light, before driv-ingto driv-ingto state Road 121 and heading toward Neola at speeds in excess of90mph. Chapman said he notified Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Luke Stradinger of the pursuit and the trooper placed tire spikes at the main intersection in Neola. The driver ran over the spikes, but was still able to drive until he attempted to make a turn on 10000 North at about 45 mph. The SUV rolled, according to Chapman, but the driver and his passenger were able to get out of the vehicle under their own power. The driver, Nicholas King, was taken by ambulance to Uintah Basin Medical Center. He was later booked into the Duchesne County Jail on suspicion sus-picion of evading, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a suspended license, and no proof of insurance. Chapman said King had six outstanding warrants for his arrest, including four no-bail warrants. King's passenger, who was medically cleared at UBMC, was not arrested. Critical injuries in Sunday crash A single-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon sent a Neola man to a Salt Lake City-area hospital with severe head and abdominal injuries. The Utah Highway Patrol said 18-year-old Roy Opsahl as driving on state Road 88 near the Brough Reservoir .turnoff at about 1:45 p.m. when he drifted off the right side of the road in a Dodge flatbed pickup truck. Trooper Brett Gehring said the truck's right side mirror struck a reflector post before it traveled across the center line. Gehring said it appeared that Opsahl over corrected and traveled trav-eled back off the right side of the road again where his vehicle rolled once. Opsahl was ejected from the truck and thrown approximately 40 to 50 feet. He was taken by ambulance to Uintah Basin Medical Center, and later flown to a hospital on the Wasatch Front. Gehring said he smelled an odor of alcohol coming from Opsahl Op-sahl and obtained ablood sample. A citation is pending until the trooper receives the test results from the sample. N.M. man pinned by pickup truck A New Mexico man was injured in-jured Wednesday when he was pinned between two pickup trucks. The accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. south of Pleasant Valley in the Nine Mile Canyon area, according to Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Roy Contreras. Contreras said 36-year-old Rosario Tarin was reaching into the bed of a 1994 Ford pickup truck when it was struck from the front by a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 driven by 1 7-year-old Texas resident Jose Servin-Morales. Servin-Morales was backing up when he struck the Ford, Contreras said, pinning Tarin between the Ford and a third truck. Because of the remote location of the accident, Tarin was flown from the scene to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. Tarin suffered multiple fractures to his left leg, as well as multiple scrapes and bruises to both legs, the trooper said. SEE PUBLIC SAFETY on A7 Call 789-3511 |
