Show C5 Vernal Express Flu season arrives Wednesday, October 17, 2007 Utah public health officials have announced that the official influenza season has arrived. According to the Utah Department De-partment of Health, influenza activity has been reported in Salt Lake and Utah counties. The first hospitalized case of influenza was reported in an elderly person from Salt Lake County last week, two weeks earlier than the first hospitalized case in 2006. In addition, Utah County is reporting a cluster of confirmed influenza cases. None of the affected individuals has been hospitalized. The influenza activity status for Utah has been classified as "sporadic" because influenzahas been lab-confirmed, but there are not high numbers of people with influenza-like illness being reported. It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to provide full pro tection, so with the upcoming holiday and travel season, health officials are saying this is the time to be vaccinated. Vaccine manufacturers anticipate an-ticipate that sufficient influenza vaccine supplies will be available for the 2007-08 season. The public should contact their local lo-cal health department or health care provider, the Immunization Hotline at 1-800-275-0659, or check the Flu Vaccine Locator at www.immunize-utah.org to find an influenza vaccination clinic. If you think you have influenza, influen-za, see a doctor within 24 hours. Prescription medication, if taken within two days after symptoms appear, can help reduce the severity sever-ity and duration of illness. Wyoming officer who shot escapee is back on patrol MANILA(AP)-The Wyoming officer who shot an escaped killer from Utah is back on the beat after his bosses said his actions were justified. Cpl. Mike Picerno of the Sweetwater County Sheriffs Office was placed on paid leave after shooting Danny Gallegos at the end of a high-speed chase Sept. 29. "Two armed, desperate killers loose in darkness in a residential area - had Corporal Picerno and the others not taken the swift, effective action they did, that's exactly what we would have had," Sheriff Rich Haskell said last Tuesday. Gallegos, 49, and Juan Diaz- Arevalo, 27, escaped from the Daggett County Jail, near the Wyoming border, on Sept. 23. They are convicted killers who were housed at the jail because there was no room at Utah prisons. pris-ons. After six days on the run, they tied up a 79-year-old man inside his trailer and stole his sport utility vehicle and three guns. Police spotted the Ford Explorer and placed spikes in the road to stop it. Gallegos was shot when he refused re-fused to drop a rifle, the sheriffs office said. He was listed in fair condition at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City Tuesday last week. NQ $ Q (T (S TRUSTED SECURE RESPECTED Since 1 907.
