Uintah edges Park City By Casey Chr8tbb Express Writer Uintah won the first game and then lost two in a row to the miners before finally coming out on top in the match three games to two on Oct. 9. "We did very well to comeback come-back and win the match like that. We're learning to play as a team and to trust each other," explained Head Coach Doris Salazar The first game ended 25-19 in Uintah's favor and then the next two games went to Park City, 25-19 and 25-17. After the first two games Salazar Sala-zar said her girls regrouped. "I told them ' we've worked too hard and came too far to lose like this,'" said Salazar. "They played hard after that and gave 110 percent to come away with the win." Krista Shewell had 25 kills in the match and Kristine Cochran finished close behind her with 15. Krystal Calder added eight. Kaylee Poglajen put on a show with 43 assists. "After the first two games I was thinking 'we're so much better than this, we can't lose like this,'" stated Cochran, who felt the two games they gave up to the Miners were do to a bad mindset. As one of the team leaders, Cochran knew that setting the mood fell on her shoulders. "I knew I had to pump up the team," she said, "I couldn't make immature mistakes." Despite the ending, Head Coach Cort Pierce felt this was one of the best seasons the Utes have ever had. "No team from Uintah has ever gone past the second and only four teams have made it past the first round," said Pierce. The last time the Utes advanced ad-vanced past the first round of the state soccer playoffs was in 1999 "so this was the best finish we've had in almost 10 years," said Pierce. Adding to the positive perspective per-spective is the quality of the opponent the Utes defeated in the first round. "Delta only lost twice, and both those were to Juan Diego," said Pierce. Candice Redden and Annalise Lewis had both the goals for the Utes in their win over the Rabbits. Rab-bits. Delta was the second place team out of Region 8. Uintah was the fifth place team from Region 10 because of a deciding coin flip that placed Judge in fourth. The result of the coin flip put the Utes against Wasatch in the second round. Where they couldn't hold off an offensive attack at-tack by Tar a Gerhing, who ended the game with three goals. "She is an amazing athlete," said Pierce, "This was probably prob-ably our best showing against them." Returning only two seniors to the squad next year has not dampened Pierce's expectations. expecta-tions. "We'll be a powerhouse next -7 year," said Pierce, "This loss was nothing to hang our heads over." At the half the Utes were down 3-0 and Pierce reminded his seniors that this could possibly pos-sibly be their last time playing Ute soccer. "The whole senior class stepped it up. We tried to get Wasatch to play on their heels, but it didn't work. I told the girls not to leave anything on the field and I don't think they did," said Pierce. I Pierce attributes this year's success to a great coaching staff, their employers willingness to allow them to work with the girls and the school's involvement. "The community support was great this year. Soccer is a growing grow-ing sport in the Basin, we get more and more kids out every year," said Pierce. With the continued support of so many, Pierce hopes his prediction of a budding soccer powerhouse will not miss its mark next year. i 'i ' : tV I I I lUOlUJ r , L-Jf Boys X-Country: Colton Remum J |
