Show Wednesday, October 17, 2007 A9 sen Survey: 74 of Utah Children Up-to-Date Utah's Child Immunization rates rise, still not perfect Vernal Express Uintah Basin Item Sanrict Adequate immunization of all children is one of the primary goals of the TriCounty Health Department. Because of this goal, the health department often sponsors radio spots and educational services to better help parents. . "We keep the message before the public," Lynne Gagon, nursing nurs-ing director at TriCounty said about the recent advertising campaign. "There is always room to improve. We want to do the absolute best for our children." Gagon works with the tri-county tri-county department that has offices in Vernal, Roosevelt, Duchesne, and Manila. The department's goal is that parents par-ents will closely adhere to the infant and toddler immunization schedule. Health department director, Joseph Shaffer explained that the schools are very cooperative in informing parents about what immunizations the students need. "Once they hit kindergarten, they hit the system," Shaffer said. "We follow them pretty closely, because the school nurse reviews those immunization records. The biggest problem we deal with is the immunization of newborns." According to Shaffer more parents are taking their children to a health care professional for these vaccinations, rather than to their nearest public heath department ' "Whenthehealthdepartment did 100 percent of all the immunizations," immu-nizations," Shaffer explained, "we were good about keeping track. But now a lot of private providers are doing it. We lose people on the wayside." Shaffer recognizes that there are a lot more parents who "opt out" on inoculating their children chil-dren than in times past. Presently, all 50 states allow exemptions for medical reasons, 48 states for religious reasons, and 20 states (including Utah) for philosophical reasons. In Utah, exemption requests for these reasons are submitted on the Utah Department of Health Exemption Form. According to The Center for Public Policy and Administration, Administra-tion, Utah comes sixth in the nation in an overall health as sessment by the United Health Foundation. This rating is favorable favor-able towards the Beehive State despite the fact that the 2006 National Immunization Survey ranked Utah fourth to last in the nation for the number of 2-year-olds who are fully immunized. One formula applies throughout the county, depending on the value of your property and the tax district in which the residence occurs. For an example, a home with a market mar-ket value of $200,000 situated in Vernal City's tax district 4 will have a residential exemption exemp-tion of 55 percent. The taxable value, or the amount on which the property's tax is figured, is $1 10,000. The total property tax is $1094.61. That is, $200,000 x 0.55 equals $110,000 x .009951 (tax rate for district 4) $1094.61. The County Treasurer's office collectstherundsandappprtions those funds to the all the various entities. Each tax district pays a different differ-ent rate to the different entities assigned to the district. Uintah County, for example, is just one of the entities receives a portion por-tion of property tax dollars. As indicated in the pie chart, the largest amount of tax dollars are apportioned to the Uintah School District and State Supported Schools entities. Residents will receive tax notices by Oct. 31 and payment is due by Nov. 30. If tax returns are sent by mail they must be postmarked by theNov. deadline date. To ensure proper receipt of tax returns to the Treasurer's office by mail, taxpayers should send in returns a day or two earlier. Penalties may apply. A two percent or $ 10 penalty, which ever is greater, for a parcel will apply for returns sent in after the Nov. 30 deadline. Taxpayer may come in to the office at 147 E. Main, Vernal to pay or mail checks payable to the Uintah County Treasurer. A mortgage set up with an escrow account will receive a tax notice but the mortgage company will send in the payment. When mortgage companies handle payments, pay-ments, a resident may want to contact the company to confirm their response. . Tax notices sent to residents for properties that have been sold during the tax year should forward those notices to the new owner or contact the treasurer's office. Once again, tax time is upon us. . ItahSdrxIDEtK. $51733 .
