Show Vernal Express Wednesday, December 6, 2006 B5 i A. Pf -J Miracle Dog book available at Uintah County library By Elizabeth Goode Fullbright gets the inspriation for his work from local canyons. "&8Sggr Express Writer Remember Quentin, the basenji mix "Miracle Dog" who escaped death in the gas chamber cham-ber on Gasconade Street in St. Louis? The only dog to ever live through the chamber, he was rescued from a second try and came to be a beloved pet of his guardian, Randy Grim. Grim was already the founder found-er of the Stray Rescue in St. Louis, Mo. Known as the "man who talks to dogs," he patiently rescues many street animals that are in desperate straits. Featured on Animal Planet, National Geographic, and several sev-eral other television shows, he (and Quentin) have written a book about their experiences, and those of other pets, some less fortunate in finding a "forever "for-ever home." Quentin became the advocate advo-cate for saving pets that are doomed to die because they are homeless; he and Randy travel, making appearances in which Quentin shines like the star he is. Randy, perhaps the only person employed by a year-old basenji-mix dog, is far more comfortable in the presence of pets than people, but lives through his social anxieties to be the spokesman for Quentin. Proceeds generated have helped with great accomplishments, including the closing of the gas chamber in St. Louis, which now is using injection methods instead. Emphasis is being placed on "adopt and save a life," rewarding reward-ing neutering, and encouraging prospective pet owners to be certain they are ready to enter into a life-long relationship. The term "Guardian" is replacing replac-ing "Owner" across the nation, and the campaign for "no more killing" is adopted in many locations in most states, including includ-ing Utah. Not only does Quentin steal hearts, he also opens minds to better living for pets and owners. Fullbright also displays his passion for fly fishing in some of his work. Western Heritage Museum announces last art show of year The Western Heritage Museum's last art show of the year is now on display. Local artist Randy Fullbright is displaying dis-playing 37 of his pieces in a show called "Christmas in the Canyon." Fullbright gets the ideasafor his pieces from the canyons around the area. "My grandfather grandfa-ther dragged me into canyons and was really the one who got me into the art world," said Fullbright. He is dedicating the show to his grandfather saying, "This show is dedicated to the memory of Stanley Harrison, a man who, long ago, instilled in a young boy a love and respect for the petroglyphs of eastern UtahThanks grandpa!" " """" ' Fullbright's pieces are made of handcast paper? He first molds a sculpture out of clay or wax and then makes a poly-urethane poly-urethane mold. He uses 100 percent per-cent fiber paper pulp and vacuum vacu-um presses the paper onto the mold, lets it dry for 2-3 weeks, then dry brushes with pastel paints. Most of what he knows fey .iOA Z: .... wmmmamm has been self-taught through books and practice. Fullbright had been doing bronze sculpting for years before discovering this new 'outlet for his creative abilities! He couldn't achieve the results he wanted with bronze and found the texture of the paper is what draws him to enjoy working with it. "There is an awful lot of experimentation that went into these," said Fullbright. He added that his work continues to evolve and he is excited to see what the work will look like next year. The show will run until Dec. 29. Prices for the art range from $150 to $750. Give the Gift of Light & Warmth Are you looking for the perfect gift for a friend or relative?
